News from NUCSER | Awareness program on Environment and Animal rights

Compassion for animals is intimately connected with goodness of character. In view of increase in cruelty to animals in the present times, it was felt that there was a need for a sensitization and awareness program for the students, aimed at protection of the animal species.

With the right motivation provided by the University NSS Co-ordinator, Dr. Sumalatha Shetty and support by the Director of NUCSER, Prof. Anirban Chakraborty, the NSS Cell of NUCSER conducted an awareness program on environment and animal rights on 22nd Feb, 2021 at University Auditorium, Paneer campus. The chief guest for the function was Ms. Suma R Nayak, an advocate by profession and Trustee of an NGO, Vatsalya, that runs an animal care shelter for abandoned and injured stray animals at Shaktinagar, in the outskirts of Mangaluru. The chief guest in her address presented an overview of the activities of the shelter and urged the student volunteers to join in this noble cause of caring for animals.

Dr. Alka Kulkarni, Registrar, NitteDU, presided over the event. The NSS volunteers from constituent colleges of NitteDU were the participants. Prof. Dr. Indrani Karunasagar, Director Projects, NUTEC; Prof. Dr. CS Shastry, Principal, NGSM Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Prof. Vinod Aranha, Director, Nitte Institute of Architecture, were also present. NUCSER Students Visit Animal Care Centre

As a part of the co-curricular activities, the NSS Cell of NUCSER organized a visit of students to the Animal Care Centre, located in Shaktinagar in the outskirts of Mangaluru on 16th Feb 2021. The shelter is run under the aegis of an NGO, The Animal Care Trust, which has been working towards providing care and shelter to sick, stray, abandoned and injured animals over the last two decades. The shelter works like a hospital and is equipped with all basic needs including an operation facility.

About 40 NSS volunteers took part in this event, accompanied by Dr. Rama Adiga, NSS Coordinator of the Institute. It was a great experience for the volunteers to have a first-hand experience on how the sick and injured animals are looked after by the staff at the Centre and how their selfless acts bring these animals back to life. Many of the animals are given by the Trust free of cost to people who are willing to adopt pets. The shelter is also actively involved with the Government in implementation of animal birth control programs and vaccination of community animals.
