News from NUCSER | NUCSER hosts Govt of Manipur officials for a training on microplastics

A six-day intensive training program on Microplastic Quantification and Characterization from water, soil, air and food samples was conducted at NUCSER from 15th to 20th December 2025, for a team of five government officials from the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Govt. of Manipur, Imphal. The program was systematically planned to provide both theoretical understanding and hands-on experience. Dr. Gunimala Chakraborty, Assoc. Professor and HoD, Molecular Genetics & Cancer Biology and Dr. Rajeshwari Vittal, Asst. Professor, Dept. of Food Safety & Nutrition, were the resource persons for the training program. The sessions included training in collecting water & sand samples, followed by laboratory-based sample preparation, digestion techniques and staining for microplastic identification, and finally characterization by advanced analytical techniques, such as FTIR spectroscopy and fluorescence microscopy. As a part of the program, the trainees got an opportunity to visit One Earth Lab, Baikampady, where the principles and the working of atmospheric sampler were demonstrated.

On the final day, a formal interaction with the institute leadership was held and the trainees were handed over the Completion Certificates. Ms. Masmarika Mohan and Ms. Thushitha Salian, Research Scholars at the Department of Molecular Genetics & Cancer were actively involved in guiding & assisting participants during the practical sessions.
