News from NUINS | Emerging Technologies in Surgery - Industry-Sponsored Workshop

The Institution Innovation Council (IIC) of NUINS in collaboration with the Department of Surgery, Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital, successfully organized an Industry-Sponsored Workshop on "Emerging Technologies in Surgery: Fundamentals for Healthcare Professionals" on 11th July 2026 at Avishkar Auditorium, ABSMIDS.

The workshop sponsored by SERVIER India Pvt. Limited was inaugurated by Chief Guest, Dr. Vinay Rajendra, Consultant Surgical Oncologist. The workshop featured expert sessions by Dr. Prajwal Chandrashekhara on Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) for Varicose Veins and Dr. Praveen M Pawar on Introduction to Robotic Surgery.











The sessions provided valuable insights into emerging surgical technologies, minimally invasive procedures and the future of modern patient care through engaging discussions and clinical demonstrations.

News from ABSMIDS | International oral & maxillofacial surgeons day

The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, ABSMIDS conducted a cancer awareness program on the occasion of the International Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon’s Day on 13th February 2025 at Glass House, KS Hegde Hospital emphasizing the crucial theme “Early detection and Prevention of oral cancer” aligning with AOMSI guidelines. The program aimed at educating the community on the prevention, early detection and treatment of oral cancers and highlighted the critical role of maxillofacial surgeons in managing these types of cancers.

The event was inaugurated by Dr. Mithra N Hegde, Principal, ABSMIDS. The Chief Guest Dr. Vinay Kumar J Rajendra, Surgical Oncologist, KSHEMA shared his invaluable insights on cancer treatment & prevention. Prof. (Dr) MS Ravi, Vice Principal, ABSMIDS delivered the presidential address. Prof. (Dr) Padmaraj Hegde, HoD, OMFS addressed the gathering and Prof. (Dr) Arvind Karikal accentuated the role of maxillofacial surgeons in managing oral cancers.

A Quiz was organized for students & healthcare professionals to enhance their knowledge on oral cancer prevention and early detection. A street play was performed by interns & postgraduates, to spread awareness about oral cancer. The play highlighted real-life scenarios, emphasizing the significance of early detection & lifestyle modifications to prevent oral cancer. This was followed by a Q&A session, allowing for discussion with the healthcare experts.

News from NMAMIT | Hackfest '24

Hackfest '24, a 3-day National level Hackathon held from 5 th to 7th April 2024 at NMAM Institute of Technology, focused on the theme "Retrofuturism: Hack the Timestream”. The event was hosted by Finite Loop Club of NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte and powered by EGDK India Pvt. Ltd., along with co-sponsorship from Niveus Solutions Pvt. Ltd. and The Global Point.

Over 225 participants from 27 colleges formed 60 teams, to tackle this 50-hour on-site event featuring an intense and exhilarating 36-hour coding marathon spanning 6 tracks: FinTech, Sustainable Development, Healthcare, Metaverse, Open Innovation and Logistics.

Faculty advisors Dr. Shashank Shetty and Mr. Puneeth RP, along with student organizers Mr. Swasthik Shetty, Mr. Nagaraj Pandith and Mr. Prathama SJ, led the event featuring tech talks, jam sessions, gaming events and a prize pool exceeding Rs. 2,00,000.

Hackfest '24 featured an array of enthralling events including an inauguration ceremony, insightful tech talks, jam sessions, gaming competitions, project demo presentations and a grand valedictory function, all supported by the CSI NMAMIT Chapter and Rachana Club.

Registrations for Hackfest '23 opened on February 19, 2024. A total of 2,038 logins were recorded resulting in the formation of 313 teams and submission of 212 ideas. 60 teams were shortlisted to participate in the event.



The Hackfest '24 inaugural ceremony was held on 5th April 2024 with an air of excitement with MCs Ms. Apeksha Nayak and Ms. Shaivi Salian setting the tone. Dr. Shashank Shetty escorted the dignitaries, including Chief Guests Mr. Desmond Rego, Team Manager from EGDK India Pvt. Ltd, Mr. Adarsh Prabhu, Associate Director, Niveus Solutions and Guest of Honor Dr. Gopal Mugeraya, Vice President (Technical) from Nitte University.


The prayer song by Ms. Shreya S Rao and the lamp lighting ceremony by the dignitaries marked the auspicious start. Dr. Gopal Mugeraya inaugurated Hackfest '24, the 3-day event dedicated to innovation, creativity and collaboration. Dr. Shashank Shetty extended a warm welcome to the gathering and acknowledged the support of the sponsors.

Mr. Desmond Rego, Mr. Adarsh Prabhu and Dr. Gopal Mugeraya inspired the participants with their insightful talks. Nitte Education Trust President & Chancellor of Nitte University, Shri. N Vinaya Hegde and Principal of NMAMIT Dr. Niranjan N Chiplunkar highlighted the institution's commitment to innovation. The esteemed panel of judges and mentors were introduced to the audience. Mr. Puneeth RP delivered the vote of thanks.










Tech Talk
Mr. Adarsh Prabhu, Associate Director, Niveus Solutions with his expertise in technology application modernization, provided the participants with valuable insights into the latest trends and advancements in the field. He discussed strategies for modernizing technology applications to enhance efficiency, scalability and performance. Participants benefited from Mr. Prabhu's expertise, gaining a deeper understanding of the importance of embracing modern technologies to stay competitive in today's fast-paced digital landscape.


 

Mr. Suraj N, Senior Data Scientist at EGDK India Pvt Ltd., delivered an engaging tech talk that shed light on the intricacies of data science. He shared his expertise on data analysis, machine learning and predictive modeling. The participants appreciated the opportunity to learn from his extensive experience and expertise in the field of data science.



The Social Media Committee organized a vibrant jam session led by Orville Anthony Sequeira & Team on 5th April 2024, creating a lively atmosphere filled with music and camaraderie. From 9:00 pm to 10:00 pm, participants enjoyed singing and playing musical instruments, fostering a sense of community and relaxation after a day of intense hacking. The jam session provided participants with an opportunity to unwind & recharge, contributing to a positive and enjoyable experience for all. Participants embraced the cool vibes of the night, showcasing their talents and bonding with fellow attendees through the power of music.

Overtime - Valorant Gaming Event

As part of Hackfest 2024, the organizing team comprising of Kshitiz Mangal, III CSE; Tejas D'Souza, II ISE and Nihal Mohan, III CSE hosted "Overtime," a thrilling Valorant gaming event on 6th April from 10:00 am to 8:30 pm. The event attracted a total of 10 teams, each consisting of 5 members, who competed fiercely for the coveted title. After an exhilarating day of intense gameplay, the following were declared as winners:

The event was a resounding success, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the organizers, volunteers and participants who made it all possible. "Overtime" provided participants with an exciting opportunity to showcase their gaming skills and compete at the highest level.


Selection and Presentation by Top 15 Teams

Out of the 60 teams that participated in the Hackathon, the following 15 teams were shortlisted for the demo presentation round. 



The valedictory ceremony of Hackfest was held on 7th April at 3 PM in Sambhram Hall, NMAMIT. To begin, a recap video highlighting the key moments of the Hackathon was presented. Mr. Puneeth R P extended a warm welcome to all attendees and Mr. Nagaraj Pandith delivered a comprehensive report detailing the highlights and achievements of the entire hackathon.

Chief Guests Mr. Praveen Udupa, Mr. Desmond Rego and Mr. Sujith Kumar addressed the crowd. Participant feedback was solicited during the ceremony to gather insights for future improvements. The names of the winning teams for each track was announced, followed by Dr. Shashank Shetty unveiling the names of the top three overall winning teams. Dr. Shashank expressed gratitude to all participants, sponsors and supporters. The ceremony concluded with a group photo to capture the memorable

Doctors’ Day celebrated at K S Hegde Charitable Hospital

Mangaluru, July 1, 2023: Doctors’ Day was celebrated at the Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital on July 1, Saturday. A function was held in this connection at the Avishkara Auditorium of the institution.

Several senior doctors were felicitated on the occasion by Dr. N Vinay Hegde, Chancellor of Nitte Deemed-to-be University for their distinguished services to the medical field.

Dr Shukla S Shetty, Head of the Department of Gynaecology at JJM College of Davangere, Dr N Balakrishna Bhat, physician from Ujire, Dr M Jayapal Shetty, physician from Manjeshwar and Dr M Sadashiv Polnaya, Physician from Ullal were felicitated on the occasion.

Dr M Shantharam Shetty, Pro-Chancellor of Nitte Deemed-to-be University spoke about the great physician Dr B C Roy whose birthday is being celebrated as Doctors’ Day.

News from KSHEMA | Public Awareness Program on World Hearing Day

The Department of ENT, KS Hegde Medical Academy and Nitte Institute of Speech & Hearing, in association with the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board and Association of Otolaryngologists of India, Karavali Branch, Mangalore, observed World Hearing Day on 3rd March 2023.

Prof. (Dr) Vadisha Bhat, Head, Dept. of ENT welcomed the gathering. The Chief Guest, Ms. Geetha Kulkarni, Asst Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Mangalore, addressed the audience and emphasised on educating the public on traffic rules, especially the effect of sounding horn.

Guest of Honour, Vijaya Hegde, Sr. Environmental Officer, KSPCB, emphasised the involvement of policy-making Government bodies and the public, in educating the masses on noise pollution and the hurdles faced in bringing lasting changes in the system.

As part of the NISHABDA Project, a book on noise pollution and its hazards, was released.

Dr. Shravan Alva, Asst Prof, Dept of ENT and Dr Jim, Dept of Speech & Hearing distributed prizes to the winners of the Essay and Slogan Writing competitions, which was part of the NISHABDA project to create awareness on noise pollution amongst children.

Prof (Dr) Shankar Medikeri, National President-elect, AOI, was felicitated during the program. In his address, he laid specific importance on newborn deafness screening and the importance of hearing aids. He also laid emphasis on providing hearing care to all age groups.

Prof (Dr) Satheesh Kumar Bhandary B, Vice Chancellor, Nitte DU, in his presidential remarks, stressed the importance of educating the younger generations about noise pollution and its impact. Prof T Dattatreya, Director, NISH; Sri. Ramesh KM, Environment Officer, KSPCB and Dr Vinay V Rao, Secretary, AOI Karavali were also present.

Prof Shweta, Principal, NISH gave the vote of thanks and Dr Salonee Shenoy compered the program.

News from NUINS | NSS special camp

The NSS unit of Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences organized a NSS special camp from 8th to 14th January 2023 at Shree Somanatheshwara Temple, Ira, Kundavu. 

The camp was inaugurated by Dr. Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, Vice Chancellor, Nitte University who motivated the students and congratulated the organizers for their dedicated effort in organizing the camp. The theme of the camp “Youth for Environment Development” was released by Sri. Jagadeesh Shetty, President, Shree Somanatheswara Temple. Dr. Fatima Dsilva, Principal, NUINS delivered the presidential remarks. Mrs. Agnes Dsouza, President, Ira Gram Panchayat, Mr. Latheesh K, President, Bharath Friends Club, Mr. Shashi Kumar, NSS Program Coordinator Nitte University and ASHA workers were present on this occasion. 

Students actively participated in the Shramadaan during the seven days of the camp under the guidance of Ms. Prathima, Lecturer, NUINS. A school health program was conducted on “Hygiene and First aid”. Volunteers visited the homes of the local residents and gave talks on communicable diseases, under-five diet, lifestyle modification and management of Hypertension & Diabetes. 

As a part of the camp, volunteers visited Mr. Nischal Kalladi family, who explained about dairy farming and multi-cultivation of crops like arecanut, pepper, sugarcane, cocoa, banana, chickoo, mango, jackfruit, guava and also of different vegetables.

The valedictory program was conducted on 14th January 2023. The camp was coordinated by Mrs. Suchithra BS and Mr. Sukesh Shetty NSS Program Officer, NUINS. 84 students and 3 faculty members participated in the program.
