Prof. (Dr.) Sridhar Shetty Endowment Lecture 2014 on 9 July 2014 - ABSMIDS

Prof. (Dr.) N. Sridhar Shetty is a Model for Indian Value based Education System; said Prof. M. I. SavadathI, Emeritus Professor and Former Vice Chancellor of Mangalore University. Indian education system before westernization was looking unsystematic from outside but was producing great scientists and technocrats who are in greater positions all across the world today. He was talking at ABSMIDS at Prof. (Dr.) Sridhar Shetty Endowment Lecture 2014 on 9 July 2014.

In the name of advancements we have introduced western methodology in education and that had reduced our education system only for certificates. Our education is presently focused on Qualification and not on competence; said Dr. Savadathi. Our earlier education at Post Graduate level had no syllabus. And it had produced wonderful results.

Students were asked questions from anywhere and everywhere. Many experiments that were asked for the students on dissertations were not even known to the professors. It had produced wonderful results and the students had become scholars. They were really judged on merit in those days. Present education system is based on degree and it can be bought by money; Prof. Savadathi Criticized the present day politics in Education. There are many scams happening in education today; Prof. Savadatthi told citing the example of 22 Doctoral degrees awarded in the University of Punjab on fake presentations of fossils. The professor was convicted guilty and the university reduced the punishment to just a cut of 3 increments in his salary. This spoils the educations system; said Prof. Savadatthi.

Deemed Universities are far better than UGC funded Universities; said Prof. Savadathi. The best Universities in the United States of America are all funded by Private Individuals. They spent all their fortune for this purpose. Those universities are shining examples for the world, he said.

Talking on the occasion, President of the function, Chancellor of Nitte University Dr. Vinaya Hegde expressed his hope for a positive change in the education system in next 5 to 10 years’ time. The value system will come back to education; said Dr. Vinaya Hegde

Chancellor Dr. M. Shantaram Shetty presented a memento to Dr. Savadathi. Prof. (Dr.) N. Sridhar Shetty specially thanked his students for their affection and love towards him. Prof. Savadatthi also congratulated the students of Prof. (Dr.) N. Sridhar Shetty for their unique way of marking respect to their beloved teacher.

Vice Chancellor Dr. Ramananda Shetty welcomed the gathering and Dr. M. S. Moodithaya, Registrar proposed vote of thanks.
