Public Awareness Program, ""NISHABDA" - KSHEMA

The Department of E.N.T organized a Public Awareness Program, ""NISHABDA" on 23-12-2015 at Conference hall, Office of the commissioner of police, Mangalore. The Department of ENT, K.S.Hegde Medical Academy in association with Nitte speech and hearing college has been conducting the project “NISHABDA” since 2000. The highlight of this project is to create awareness about noise pollution and the evaluation of hearing assessment in the high risk population. This year 2016 as a part of our ongoing project the deafness detection camp in traffic personnel was conducted on 23rd December in conference hall, office of the commissioner of police, Pandeshwar, Mangalore. The traffic personnel who are working in the busy traffic areas are exposed to loud noise. This screening camp helps to identify the traffic police personnel whose hearing is affected and they can take adequate steps to prevent further hearing deterioration. The programme was inaugurated by Mr.S. Murugan (I.P.S) Commissioner of Police, Mangalore city and programme was presided over by Prof (Dr.) Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, Dean of KSHEMA. Mr. Rajashekar puranik , environmental officer, KSPCB was the guest of honour. This camp was well appreciated by police commissioner.






Workshop, "Radio frequency ablation" - KSHEMA

The Department of General Surgery organized a Workshop, "Radio frequency ablation" on 21-12-2015 at Justice K.S. Hedge charitable hospital. Department of General Surgery , Justice KS Hegde Charitable Hospital conducted a live workshop on Radio frequency ablation organised in association with Dr Sourabh Rai consultant vascular surgeon Narayana Hrudayalaya hospitals, Banglore.on 21/12/2015 which was headed by Dr Sourabh Rai and Dr K R Bhagavan HOD dept of surgery KSHEMA . There was a live demonstration of treatment modalities of varicose veins , all the staff and postgraduates of department of general surgery had a opportunity to attend as well as gain knowledge about Radio frequency ablation and foam sclerotherepy.

Anish V Cherian, Assistant Professor, Psychiatry, KSHEMA for the Best Poster Presentation award in " Deliberations on Care Delivery (DECADE) for Mental Illness in Rural Communities" held on 12th day of December-2015 at Thirthahalli. The Conference is organized by Department of Psychiatry, NIMHANS & Indian Psychiatric Society- Karnataka Chapter.


Prof.(DR.) U.S.Krishna nayak gets Prestigious international award - ABSMIDS

Prof. (Dr.) U.S.Krishna Nayak, Principal and Dean, A.B.Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences and Past President, Indian Orthodontic Society has been presented with prestigious Dr.H.D.Merchant Memorial Award by the International College of Dentists, USA for his Outstanding contribution in the field of Dentistry in general and to International College of Dentists in particular. The award was presented by Prof. (Dr.) Phillip Dowell, International President, International College of Dentists at a function held recently at Mumbai.

A.B.Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences was awarded the prestigious “BEST DENTAL COLLEGE AWARD OF THE YEAR” AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL for its achievement of Academic Excellence, imparting Quality Clinical Care and promoting overall development of Students. The Award was presented at Hotel Le-Meridian, Delhi on Monday, 21st December 2015.






The College was also presented the coveted Award for ‘Best Community Services’ at the National Level during the year 2015 at the Annual Convocation and Awards Ceremony of International College of Dentists held at Nehru Centre, Worli, Mumbai on Sunday, 20th December 2015. Tribute to Late Dr. AP J Abdul Kalam - MRSMEMS

Children of our school participated in a unique campaign ‘dearkalamsir- a handwritten postcard tribute to Late Dr. AP J Abdul Kalam. It is a unique community art project, created by LETTER FARMS – Kochin, Kerala to enable people from all walks of life to offer special tribute to Dr. Kalam using the most personal and powerful communication medium ever- handwritten letters, launched across 22 states on 15thOctober, Dr. Kalam’s 84th birth anniversary. Our children drew, wrote poems and creatively pursued what they felt the best tribute to him. Handpicked tribute will be showcased on websites and social media over the coming weeks.

Workshop on ‘’Clinical Challenges in Psychiatric Practice- Enhancing Performance in Functioning’’ - KSHEMA

Department of Psychiatry, K.S. Hegde Medical Academy (KSHEMA), Nitte in association with Mangalore Psychiatric Society (M.P.S.) organized a workshop on ‘’Clinical Challenges in Psychiatric Practice- Enhancing Performance in Functioning’’ on Saturday, the 28th Novemebr-2015 in the Seminar Hall, 2nd Floor, Justice K.S. Hegde Charitable Hospital, Deralakatte, and Mangalore.

The programme was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, Dean of KSHEMA, Vice Dean. Dr. Prakash P.S. , Dr. Nagesh Pai , Professor in psychiatry, Wollongong University, presided over the function. Dr.Sripathy Bhat, Psychiatrist, Udupi , Dr. Kiran Kumar, Prof. & HoD, Department of Psychiatry, were present . This workshop was aimed at psychiatry post graduate students. , M.Sc. Clinical Psychology students and M.S.W. Students in and around mangaluru.

Dr. Santosh Prabhu, Asst. Professor, Department of Psychiatry, KSHEMA spoke on ‘’Concept of treatment resistance –What are the Challenges?”, Professor, Nagesh Pai spoke on “ Domain of cognition – in Schizophrenia and Mood disorders- Are they Relevant? “ and Prof. Sripathy M .Bhat , Psychiatrist, KMC , Manipal spoke on How to deal with uncertainty in clinical Practice. Awareness about noise pollution “NISHABDA” - KSHEMA

The Department of ENT, K.S.Hegde Medical Academy has been conducting the project “NISHABDA” since 2000. The highlight of this project is to create awareness about noise pollution and the evaluation of hearing assessment in the high risk population. Previously we have conducted this screening camp in factory workers, traffic police men, drivers and auto rickshaw drivers. Information needed about NMAMIT alumni - NMAMIT

HRD is coming out with National Ranking system of all engg colleges in India. This will help parent and students select the right college. NMAMIT is also participating in this ranking system. I request all nmamit alumni to give information about details about students who passed out in the last ten years and have become entrepreneurs. Also we need to collect information about students who have passed GATE,UPSC EXAM, KPSC EXAM, CAT in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15. Comprehensive oral health care programme at Snehasadan, Gurupura - ABSMIDS

As a part of “Dazzle 30” Community Outreach Programme, the Department of Public Health Dentistry, A. B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences conducted a comprehensive oral health care programme at ‘Snehasadan’, Gurupura Kaikamba - an Institute working among the HIV affected children on 13th December 2015.

Oral Checkup, Health education with slide show presentation was done and oral hygiene kits were distributed for all inmates. Drawing competition and games were conducted for the children and the winners were awarded. Mr. Damodhar Salian, Five Star, Bantwal and Mr. Krishna Kumar Poonja, Sevanjali Trust, Farangipete donated T-Shirts for the children.

A Christmas programme was organized by the I and III year students of A.B.Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, Deralakatte, for all the inmates.

Voluntary contribution was collected by the 3rd BDS students from all the staff and students of A.B.Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, Deralakatte, which was utilized for Snehasadan towards their provision and other needs.

The programme ended with the fellowship lunch hosted by A.B.Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, Deralakatte, for all the inmates of Snehasadan.


Inaugural function of New Community based Public heath physiotherapy center - NIPT

Nitte Institute of physiotherapy, Nitte university Inaugurated their New Community based Public heath physiotherapy center at Abhaya ashraya Assaigoli on 16-12-2015 10 A.M. The Physiotherapy center was Inaugurated by Prof Dr Ramanand shetty, Vice-chancellor Nitte university. Principal of Physiotherapy college Dr Dhanesh kumar welcomed the dignitaries. On this occasion Mr Veluswamy Deputy general manager, rural electric corporation, Mr Prakshan , Help age India, Abhaya ashraya President Mr Sreenath hegde , Dr Ajith soman, Prof Purushotham chippala, Mr Ajay thakur were present on the occasion.

Valedictorian ceremony of 8 days N S S special camping programme - NIPT

Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy, Nitte university Organized a valedictorian ceremony of 8 days N S S special camping programme at Ira Somanatheswara temple. On this occasion Ira seva samithi president Mr Yathiraj shetty, Mr Gopal poojary, Mr Sreedhar Bhandary, Mr Shantharam Shetty bolanthoor were present as dignitaries. College Principal Dr Dhanesh Kumar . Dr Ajith S , N S S Officer Mr Subash chandra rai,felicitated the dignitaries and other citizens of village by thanking their contribution to special camping programme. End of the Programme cultural activities were conducted by the students of physiotherapy and villagers followed by dinner and camp fire activity.


Karunya –helping hand for disabled - NIPT

KARUNYA NIPT has donated a pair of ankle foot orthosis, bilateral knee brace and bilateral resting hand splint to pediatrics ward patient named Laxmi ,11 years old diagnosed with Meningitis. Dr. Sandeep Rai head of department of pediatrics surgery handed over the aids to the patient. On this occasion Dr. Dhanesh Kumar K.U Principal, Mrs. Suchetha P.S and Miss Sumam Sunny were present.


FDP - NSAMPUC BLORE

Dr. NSAM PUC arranged an FDP for both PU and FGC staff on 5-12-2015 on ' Challenges faced by teachers in today's world and Classroom management'. FDP was conducted by Mrs.Vijayam Kartha, an eminent educationalist, recipient of several awards including the President's award for the best teacher. Welcome speech was given by Dr.Meera Krishnappa, Principal, FGC.








Mrs. Vijayam Kartha summarized the challenges in classroom teaching

1. Providing individual attention
2. Dealing with indiscipline.
3. Parental expectation.
4. Student's attitude.
5. Teacher's own knowledge base.
6. Workload.
7. Expectations from college management.

She recommended the remedies for the same as follows:
1. To find out the source of indiscipline
2. Children always respond to love and genuine concern, to accept them unconditionally.
3. Knowing the students and showing care.
4. Teacher decides the classroom climate.
5. A teacher affects eternity.
6. Discussion of only positive stories in the staff room.
7. To ensure that all the students understood the subject.

Mrs. Vijayam Kartha also elaborated on giving personalized attention to the students and and making lessons interesting and meaningful.
1. Peer help/mentoring.
2. To encourage queries and to listen with rapt attention.
3. Extra reading and thorough preparation of lessons.
4. Explanation of lessons taking instances from real life.
5. Encouraging seminars and group discussions.

She also spoke at length on how to deal with student's attitude as mentioned below.
1. Teachers are role models.
2. Expose the students to people from different walks of life.
3. Share latest news on burning topics.
4. Undertake community work; provide real life experiences .
5. Awareness among teachers that they also were students once and the influence their teachers had in their life.

The FDP was very interactive, beneficial, and had a great influence on all the teachers. Mrs. Vijayam Kartha's real life experiences gave new insights to the teachers to have a better understanding of their role as teachers and how they can influence the students.

The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Nanditha.

Workshop - NSAMPUC BLORE

Dr. NSAM PUC had arranged a workshop for the students on 5-12-2015 based on the survey result regarding the various challenges faced by them both academically and personally. The workshop was conducted by Mrs.Vijayam Kartha, an eminent educationalist, recipient of several awards including the President's award for the best teacher. Our Principal, Mrs. Rajalakshmy.K.P., welcomed the chief guest and addressed the gathering.




The workshop started with a power point presentation on the topic, 'Towards a Life of My Dream.' She explained the importance of maintaining a journal or a record of one's dreams. Citing various examples from life, she elaborated the numerous obstacles to a student's academic and personal growth. The main areas where the students need personalized attention like academic result, his/her future, financial status, social status, procrastination, relationships with the opposite gender, looks, health, etc. were discussed in detail including appropriate solution for all problems. Mrs. Vijayam Kartha stated that the habit of reading helps one to accept oneself. She shared her personal stories to inspire and motivate the students to relate to life in a much positive way. She also asserted that to accept oneself and to work with one's shortcomings is one of the gateways to achieve success in life. Importance of doing Yoga, Pranayama, and Meditation was mentioned. She stated that in today's world, unempolyability is the problem.

Next, she emphasised the ASK Principle, the abbreviated form of Attitude, Skills, and Knowledge, out of which, Attitude holds the primary position. Finally, Mrs. Vijayam Kartha summarized the workshop by listing out the various tools to lead a 'Life of My Dream' as follows:

1) Accept oneself. 2) Beware of thoughts. Thoughts become 'things.' 3) Power within subconscious mind, tap it through visualization, affirmation, and positive self-talk. 'World is a catalogue'; order the best from it. 4) Whatever you focus, it expands. 5) Gratitude: Start a gratitude journal; the more you are grateful, universe gives you more opportunities to be grateful. 6) Meditation: Start and end the day with 5 minutes meditation. Many benefits include increase in concentration, anger management etc. 7) Give to receive : Whatever you wish to receive, give. 8) 'To every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.' 9) Be courageous : Whatever you fear, it persists. 10) Forgive oneself and others. 11) Bless everyone: Rejoice in others' achievements; pray for universal peace and harmony - 'loka samastha sukhino bhavanthu'.

The workshop was quite interesting, informative, and truly inspirational for the students, which enhanced their inner strength to face the odds of life. It concluded with a vote of thanks by Mrs. Deepika Savithri.


Industrial visit to Mysore Sandal Soap Factory - NSAM PUC BLORE

Dr. NSAM PUC had organized an industrial visit to Mysore Sandal Soap Factory located at Yeshwantpur, Bangalore, on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Dec 2015, for both I and II PUC students, accompanied by faculty.



Mr. Gangadhar, who is an employee of the factory guided the students and briefed about the processing of soaps. They launch into the market several bathing soaps, detergents, incense sticks, and sandalwood powder. He explained in detail about the different phases that go into the making of the soaps, viz, saponification, preparation, labelling, packing, marketing etc. They did a live demonstration as to how the plant works.

The industrial visit was very informative for the students and equally satisfied their curiosity. They got a good exposure to the manufacturing of soaps and detergents using sandal wood oil, palm oil, salt etc.

Book Release Function - authored by Dr N K Thingalaya - NIBF

“Humility and dedication to work brings success” N Vinaya Hegde Chancellor Nitte University, said while releasing the book “My Life, My Times in Syndicate Bank” authored by Dr N K Thingalaya former CMD, Syndicate Bank. The function was held in the Nitte Education International campus Mangalore. Releasing the book Sri Vinaya Hegde said that memoirs of successful persons provide valuable lessons to the youngsters and inspire them to achieve progress in professional life. Speaking further Sri Hegde recalled his longstanding association with Syndicate Bank and the contribution of Dr Thingalaya to the banking and academic fields. He also felt that the devotion and dedication with which Dr Thingalaya worked is a model for the young bankers today and this will take them to a better career growth and win the accolades and confidence of the customers.


Speaking on the occasion, the author of the book, Dr N K Thingalaya, recalled the contribution of Syndicate Bank in providing banking facilities to remote rural areas where other banks hesitated to open branches. He also recounted some of the most memorable and challenging situations he encountered during his three decades Banking experience.

Dr M S Moodithaya, Registrar, Nitte University, welcoming the gathering, recalled the contribution of Dr Thingalaya in the academic field and his association with Nitte University after his retirement from the bank. Sri V Ganesan General Manager Syndicate Bank and Sri K T Rai Field General Manager Syndicate Bank also addressed the gathering and recalled the yeomen service of Dr Thingalaya in building a strong rural oriented Bank.

Prof K R Nayak proposed Vote of thanks. The program was compered by Prof M S Rao.

Training Program for Probationary Clerks of Syndicate Bank -NIBF

The two weeks Training Program for the Second Batch of Probationary Clerks of Syndicate Bank commenced at the Nitte Education International, Pumpwell Mangalore on 30/011/2015. Sri K T Rai Field General Manager Syndicate Bank inaugurated the training program and called upon the participants to know about the rich heritage of the bank and be proud Syndians. He also called upon them to acquire required skill and professional qualifications which will help them to progress along with the Bank.

Dr M S Moodithaya, Registrar Nitte University, recalled the long standing relationship between the various Nitte Institutions and Syndicate Bank and reiterated the commitment of the founders to the welfare and development of the society.

Dr N K Thingalaya former Chairman & Managing Director of SyndicateBank presided over the function and recalled the distinctive position of Syndicate Bank in the banking sector and recalled the various pro-rural and pro-poor initiatives of the bank. The program was compered by Prof M S Rao and Prof K R Nayak proposed Vote of thanks. Senior functionaries of Syndicate Bank and faculty members of Nitte Educational International were present on the occasion.




“Leadership Development” program - NIBF

Valedictory function of the “Leadership Development” program for the first time branch Managers of Indian Overseas Bank was held at our Mangalore Campus on 27/11/2015. The week long program was attended by about 30 Branch Managers from various parts of the country. Sri Shankar Jay Chief Manager Indian Overseas Bank, Mangalore Regional Office delivering the valedictory address called upon the participants to focus on recovery of Non Performing Accounts and improve the bank’s profitability. He also stressed the need of better communication skills for branch managers as they have to interact with various stakeholders. Prizes were distributed to the winners of various events held during the course of training. Prof K R Nayak welcoming the gathering outlined the various training initiatives of Nitte Educational International in providing the required skill to the upcoming Managers and Bankers at various levels Prof M S Rao compered the program and proposed vote of thanks.

Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecological Nursing of Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences, organized an International Seminar on Recent Trends in Midwifery Practice on 09-12-2015 at Justice K. S. Hegde Hospital, Seminar Hall. The Resource person for the session Ms. Cris Van Hocke, Nurse Midwife, Maria Meddlere Gent, Belgium highlighted on various aspects of midwifery practice in Belgium. Dr. Indrani Karunasagar, Director, Research and Development, Nitte University, addressed the gathering. Prof. Dr. Fatima D’Silva, Principal, NUINS, Mr. Sandeep Kumar Shetty, Chief Operating Officer, India platform, Mr. Gerrt Basyn, Ms. Anne Cardinal were present on this occasion.

National service scheme special camp - NIPT

Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy , Nitte university Deralakatte, Organized National service scheme special camp programme in Ira Somanatheshwara temple, Bantwal from 07-12-15 to 13-12-15. The Inauguration of the camp was held on 07-12-15 by Honorable vice chancellor, Nitte university Prof Dr Ramananda shetty. Prof Dr Dhanesh kumar , Principal, Nitte Institute of physiotherapy welcomed the guest and volunteers. Seva samithi Trust President Mr Yathi raj shetty addressed the gathering and school children. Temple President Mr Gopal presided over the function. Dr Subodh bhandary Bavabeedu, Mr Sridhar bhandary, Mr Sreemathi Sujatha, Mr nagesh poojary, Dr Murali mohan choontharu were other dignitaries. Prof Subash chandra rai proposed the vote of thanks. Ms Sushmitha shetty mastered the ceremony.
