Inauguration of Alumni cell - NICO

The alumni cell of Nitte Institute of Communication (NICO) was Inaugurated on September 5, Saturday at its Paneer campus in Deralakatte.

The alumni of the institution were welcomed by the Head of the Department Mr Raviraj Kini who also highlighted the importance of Alumni Cell in the college.

Speaking on the occasion he stated that an alumnus represents the institution in their field of work. They are the mediator between their alma-mater and the industry. Being the students of communication they must take responsibility in highlighting the name of the college through their work of interest. That is the ultimate thing one can contribute to its alma-mater” he added. On the occasion the former students shared their experience with the present students. While Farzana compared the event, Dilsha Ravindran delivered vote of thanks. Teaching and non teaching staff and students were present on the occasion. Alumni cell will coordinate internship and placement activities for our students through alumni network.


Contract with All India Radio- Mangalore - NICO

As a part of faculty and student development initiative, Nitte Institute of Communication has signed a contract with All India Radio to broadcast Yuvavani programmes. This initiative will provide our faculty members and students with firsthand experience in radio broadcasting and radio programming. A total of 22 students and 2 faculty members have participated in this programme. Our Yuvavani programmes on All India Radio will be broadcasted on the following dates.

Guest talk by Mr. Godwin D’souza, Senior Event Planner, AVC Events, Dubai - NICO

Godwin D’Souza, Senior Event planner, AVC Events Dubai interacted with students of NICO
on Event management practices; He gave a broad overview of the Event industry, in India
and Dubai. He explained the budget planning of an event along with advertising, marketing
and execution of events. Mr. Godwin will facilitate internships and placement for students
of NICO.


Inauguration of Nitte Film Society by Mr.Phaniraj, Author, Film critic and pop sociologist of bollywood - NICO

Nitte Film Society, an initiative to bring all movie fanatics together, was inaugurated on Friday, September 18, 2015 at NICO’s Paneer Campus in Deralakatte. Under its wing, Nitte Institute of Communication (NICO), Nitte University will be organising Mangaluru International Film Festival in September 2016 providing a new dais for film buffs and critics equally, a chance to view and appreciate regional and world cinema. The formal announcement of the event was made by the Head of Department, Mr. Raviraj Kini during the inauguration. Speaking on the occasion, he said that the institution will organise the festival keeping in mind the great film works made in various languages. The event will be a platform for cine lovers to analyse and interact with film personalities who have created a niche for themselves in the field.

The Chief Guest of the event Mr. K. Phaniraj, Professor, Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT), Manipal and the Convener of Udupi Chitra Samaj officially inaugurated the Nitte Film Society by unveiling the portrait of renowned film maker Satyajit Ray. On the occasion, he gave a call to students of communication to be the citizens of film rather being the consumers. “Every viewer can raise questions or analyse the film when they become a citizen. Film viewing is an art which needs lot of patience through which the viewer can deliver appreciation as well as criticism,” he added.

He further said that the film viewing should not be limited to smart phones or laptops but should be viewed in public along with mass. As part of the inauguration, award winning Bosnian film ‘No Man’s Land’ (2001) directed by Danis Tanovic was screened followed by a discussion. Faculty Co-ordinator Dr. Appa Rao, Student Convener Mr. Rushank, teaching and non-teaching faculty and students were present on the occasion.

About Nitte Film Society
The aim of Nitte Film Society is to inculcate the ability to view films and appreciate it with objectivity within the student body. The club will screen award winning movies, documentaries, animation films and short films once in a month for students as well as general public. The club will also organise film workshops, symposiums and interactions with prominent personalities from the field of cinema thus providing a wide networking for the students and a chance for the audience to know its film personalities better.


Inauguration of environment club- Ni-Eco by Niren Jain (Wildlife photographer, Environmentalist) - NICO

Nitte Institute of Communication, Paneer Campus, Mangalore organised a guest lecture on “Western Ghats and rehabilitation issues” on 10 September 2015. Mr. Niren Jain, Forest and Wildlife Conservationist addressed the students and said, “Humans do not respond and relate to lot of changes taking place in the environment, thus becoming irresponsible and reason for most of the destruction around them. It’s the presence of mind and the responsibility of every individual to conserve and protect that 10% of forest which is left.” He further said, “There is a continuous conflict between animals and men who are living in the forest areas, thus rehabilitating of both becoming a major issue in these Western Ghats.” He also threw light on the life and activities of the people living in the forest area.Meanwhile, he encouraged interaction and queries from students on “Environmental protection and rehabilitation of the Western Ghats” issue. The environment club of the college “NI- ECO” was also inaugurated by distributing saplingz for the cause of NICO-VANA, a student initiative in the campus.


Radio workshop by RJ Kiran (RJ at radio Mirchi 97.3 FM) - NICO

NICO organized a one day workshop on 'Radio and its broadcasting' conducted by Mr Kiran, Radio Jockey of a popular radio station, Radio Mirchi (98.3 FM), Mangalore. The workshop began with the presentation which was followed by an interactive session. He explained the scope of radio in the contemporary world and quoted radio as an honest medium. He also explained how radio as a medium via RJs fill the void for listeners through audio infotainment. Adding to it, he also shared his working experience for past two and half years in Radio Mirchi. The session was interesting and students were able to clarify their doubts and queries. Moreover, the students were motivated to pursue their interests and take forward their career choice in radio. Posing for the selfie with Kiran marked the end of the workshop.


Guest Talk by VU George (Editor of Mangalore Today) - NICO

In continuation to its attempt to maintain industry-institute interaction, NICO organised an interactive session with Mr. U. V. George, Editor, Mangalore Today, on September 1, 2015 at the Institute’s campus in Paneer. Sharing his experiences as Editor of Mangalore’s popular English magazine, he touched upon the need to uphold journalistic ethics in an increasingly competitive world. In addition to print, Mr George also spoke about related areas like Cinema, Corporate Communications and New Media. Being an interactive session, students had a lot of questions, which were answered knowledgeably and enthusiastically by Mr George.




Freshers Day at NICO

Fresher’s Day was celebrated on Friday, August 21 and the current students welcomed the first year B.A (Journalism & Mass Communication) and M.A (Journalism & Mass Communication) students to the Institute. Amidst a lot of music and fun, senior students of NICO welcomed the newcomers at the NICO campus at Paneer. To break the ice and boost their confidence, the senior students provided a platform to the freshmen to exhibit their talents and creativity. Head of the Department, Mr. Raviraj Kini welcomed the students and faculty. Both B. A. and M. A. students put many entertaining performances welcoming the fresh batch; the newcomers exhibited their talents by singing and dancing. The campus was alive with the sound of music and laughter continuing into the evening. Ms. Rehana and Mr. Prabhath Shetty of first year B.A were awarded ‘Mr and Ms Fresher’ respectively based on their performances.


Onam Celebrations at NICO

Students celebrated Onam, the harvest festival of Kerala at the campus on Wednesday, August 26. The celebration was inaugurated by Mr. Raviraj Kini, Head of Department who also addressed the students. The traditional dance of Kerala, Thiruvathira, which was performed by both students and faculty, set the stage for the festivities. In keeping with the spirit of the festival, Kerala sarees and mundu was the dress code for the day. Songs, dances, games followed with enthusiastic participation by both students and faculty. The highlight of the evening was the tug of war which happened amidst a lot of cheering and laughter. The evening ended with the prize distribution and a round of payasam.


Interaction with Suman Talwar and Vijaya Raghavendra (Popular Bollywood and sandlewood actors) - NICO

An important aspect in the field of communication is communication itself, not just across classroom but also with people who have shaped the industry in big terms and small. Nitte Institute of Communication strives to bring more interactions, seminars, workshops and other engaging sessions to help its student community not just hold a professional degree, but also build a network from the graduation days and be industry ready. In an effort to build industry-academia relations and keep the students abreast with recent trends in films, the students of Nitte Institute of Communication (NICO) were provided with an opportunity to interact with popular South Indian actors, Suman Talwar and Vijaya Raghavendra during their visit to Mangaluru on Tuesday, August 11, 2015. B. A. (Journalism & Mass Communication) students interacted with Suman Talwar, who has starred in nearly 400 movies in various languages. Suman Talwar and Vijaya Raghavendra were in Mangalore working on their upcoming Kannada movie ‘Mr. Johny’. The actor who recently made his Bollywood debut in the film ‘Gabbar Is Back’ interacted with the students on various issues and spoke about his upcoming movie, problems with dubbing domain in Kannada industry, his tryst with Hollywood and experiences in the film industry.




Investiture ceremony of students’ council (2015-16) - ABSMIDS

The Investiture ceremony of the Students’ Council of A.B. Shetty Dental College(2015-16) was held on 19th September 2015 at The K.S. Hegde Auditorium. Mr. Jayant Shetty, DSP, Karnataka State Intelligence was the Chief Guest for the function. His inspiring words struck a chord with one and all present.

The Principal and Dean Prof. (Dr.) U.S.Krishna Nayak, Vice Dean Prof.(Dr.) Mithra N. Hegde , Dean of Student Welfare Prof. (Dr.) Priyadashini Hegde and other staff members were present. The event was attended by all the 3rd BDS students as well as previous students’ Council Presidents.









Fresher’s day, 2015-2016 - NUINS

Fresher’s day, 2015-2016, was celebrated on 29th September 2015, in KSHEMA Auditorium. Dr. B Rajendra Prasad, Director, PG Studies, A.B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences was the Chief Guest for the occasion. Prof. Mrs. Sabitha Nayak, Vice Principal, College of Nursing presided over the function. Mrs. Cleeta Pinto, Principal, School of Nursing, were present on this occasion. The program was organized by the II year B.Sc.(N), II M.Sc.(N), II GNM & II PB.BSc(N) students. The theme “If you Shine like a Sun Burn like a Sun” was presented by Mr.Rameez M.D. The chief guest inspired with his message and congratulated the students. Prof. Sabitha Nayak addressed the gathering followed by a cultural programme by the fresher’s.

School dental treatment programme - ABSMIDS

As a part of the 30th year celebration of A.B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental sciences and the N-BRITE program, we from the Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry, conducted a free treatment camp in Bala Samrakshana Ashram dated on 27.09.2015 (Sunday) under the able guidance of Senior Prof. (Dr) Amitha. M. Hegde, H.O.D, Prof. (Dr) Vabitha Shetty and Prof. (Dr) Amarshree Shetty of the Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry.


Treatment was done for 79 children in the ashram whose oral health status was recorded previously on 28.06.2015.

Drawing and pencil shading competitions - NSAMPUC - Bengaluru

Drawing and pencil shading competitions were held on 24/7/2015. Many students actively participated in these competitions. They showcased their artistic talent through these mediums.The participants brought out a variety of themes for both drawing and shading using beautiful hues and shades.







One day denture camp at Dabbekatte - ABSMIDS

A one day denture camp was held at Dabbekatte on 13.09.2015 by the Department of Prosthodontics. The camp was attended with 1 Professor, 1 Reader, 5 Post Graduate Students, 10 U.G. Students, 4 Dental Technicians, 2 Para Medical Staff, 1 Electrician and 1 Sweeper. The team started at 6.30 a.m. from Deralakatte College premises, the work started at Dabbekatte around 8.30 a.m. and the camp was successfully completed up to try in stage on same day. The fit and insertion of 10 (Ten) complete Dentures was done on 18.09.2015 which was attended by 1 Professor and 4 Post graduate students on 18.09.2015.





Youth Empowerment Workshop - JKSHIM

A Four-day Youth Empowerment and Skills Plus (YES!+) workshop was organized by Justice K.S. Hegde Institute of Management as a part of the Induction Programme for the 18th Batch of 1st year MBA students from September 21 – 24, 2015 in the Institute premises. The workshop was organized in association with Art of Living Foundation, Bangalore. Mr. G.K Raghava and Mrs. Anusha Anand were the resource persons. The theme of this workshop was “Social Development through Self-development”. The workshop touched upon various issues such as handling emotions through Yoga, Pranayama and Sudarshana Kriya, Stress elimination techniques, overcoming inhibitions, caring for the society and taking concrete action in the direction of social welfare. Several management games were also conducted on handling relationships, peer-pressure, team-work and leadership. Prof. Jnaneshwar Pai Maroor, one of the faculty coordinators of the programme in the press release stated that the Youth Empowerment and Skills workshop (YES!+) is a dynamic and fun programme that challenges management students to take responsibility for their life and provides a comprehensive set of practical tools for releasing stress, mastering emotions, and raising self-awareness towards becoming better managers. Prof. Jnaneshwar Pai Maroor and Dr. Sudhir Raj K, Induction-cum-orientation coordinators and Dr. K Sankaran, Director were present.

Annual sports day SPORTIF JOUR 2015 - NUINS

The annual sports day SPORTIF JOUR 2015 of Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences was held on 24th September 2015, at Mangalore University Ground, Konaje. Lt. Col Surene Subbiah, Student Welfare Officer, Nitte University. Track and field events were conducted for the students and staff. Overall Championship was bagged by III BSC Nursing Students. The Individual Champion of Boys & Girls were Mr. Bilal TV of III BS.c (N) & Ms. Josmi of IV BS.c (N) respectively.

Continuing professional development program on fluoride and health - ABSMIDS

The Department of Oral Biology at A.B. Shetty Dental College conducted a seminar and CPD program on Fluoride and Health on 18th September 2015. The event highlighted the facts and fallacies on sources of fluoride and its quantification for Oral Health and well being. Prof.(Dr) B.H. Sripathi Rao, Principal of Yenepoya Dental College was the Chief Guest for the event. Dr. Prashant Shenoy, the Key note speaker spoke on the history and generic information on fluoride and fluorosis as applicable to Dentistry. Prof. Chitta Chowdury spoke on various aspects of fluoride and fluorosis, and encouraged the students to take up research on fluoride. Dr. Shahnawaz Khijmatgar spoke on the fluoride status in different districts of Karnataka.





Vegetable carving and Rangoli - NSAMPUC - Bengaluru

Cultural competition went on full-fledged with vegetable carving and rangoli competitions being held on 08/08/2015. Students made several new shapes out of the vegetables of their choices. Here again, they used different themes to add on to the effect of their creation. The display of rich and vibrant colors with various designs was indeed a visual feast.
