Kshema Stemcon-2015 - KSHEMA

A national conference on ‘Current Status of Stem Cells and Cell based Therapy with Emphasis on Orthopaedic Applications’ was held at K. S. Hegde Medical Academy (KSHEMA) from 3 - 4 October, 2015. This conference was jointly organised by Nitte University Centre for Stem Cell Research & Regenerative Medicine (NUCSReM) and Department of Orthopaedics, KSHEMA. The conference brought together an interdisciplinary group of professionals, such as clinicians, academicians, researchers and graduate students working in the areas of biological sciences, stem cell biology and cell based therapies.







KSHEMA STEMCON-2015 was inaugurated on 3rd October 2015 by Dr. N. Vinaya Hegde, Hon’ble Chancellor of Nitte University. During his inaugural address, Dr. Hegde emphasised the growing prominence of research in medical education and called upon the students and faculty to utilize R&D infrastructure created at the Nitte University in the best way. He later released the conference proceedings. Prof. (Dr.) S. Ramananda Shetty, Vice-Chancellor of Nitte University presided over the function. In his address, Prof. Shetty highlighted the continued support of University in emerging research areas like stem cells in medicine and the responsiveness to the genuine needs of the healthcare. The resource persons from abroad Prof. (Dr.) A. Ananthram Shetty, Chair of Orthopaedics and Director of Research, Institute of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Health and Wellbeing, Canterbury Christchurch University, Kent, UK, Prof. (Dr.) Akihiro Umezawa, Deputy Director of National Research Institute for Child Health and Development (NCCHD), and Deputy Director for Cellular and Tissue based products, Centre for product evaluation, Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA), Tokyo, Japan and Prof. (Dr.) Seok Jung Kim, Director of Cell Therapy Centre and an Orthopaedic Surgeon at The Catholic University of Korea, Seoul, Republic of Korea were the guests of honour. The Registrar of Nitte University, Prof. M. S. Moodithaya and the Dean of KSHEMA, Prof. (Dr.) B. Satheesh Kumar Bhandary were the chief guests. Dr. Ramakrishna Bhat was the Observer from Karnataka Medical Council. Prof. (Dr.) M. Shantharam Shetty, Pro-Chancellor of Nitte University delivered welcome address and Prof. (Dr.) K. Jayaprakash Shetty, Registrar, KSHEMA proposed the vote of thanks. Dr. M. Siddharth Shetty, Dept. of Orthopaedics, KSHEMA compered the programme.

The renowned speakers of national and international repute including Prof. (Dr.) M. Shantharam Shetty, Pro-Chancellor of Nitte University, Prof. (Dr.) A. Ananthram Shetty from Canterbury Christchurch University, United Kingdom, Prof. (Dr.) Akihiro Umezawa from NCCHD, Tokyo, Japan, Prof. (Dr.) Seok Jung Kim from The Catholic University of Korea, Seoul, Republic of Korea, Dr. Shirshendu Mukherjee Wellcome Trust, London, UK, Prof. (Dr.) Vikram Mathews from Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, Prof. (Dr.) B. K. Dinakar Rai, from PSG Hospitals, Coimbatore, Prof. (Dr.) Roopa Nadig Dayananda Sagar College of Dental Sciences, Bengaluru, Prof. (Dr.) Princy Louis Palatty from Father Muller Medical College, Mangaluru, Dr. Swarup Chakrabarti from DiponEd BioIntelligence LLP., Bengaluru, Dr. U. Raghuraja from KSHEMA, Deralakatte, Dr. Yogeesh D. Kamat from KMC Hospital, Mangaluru and Dr. M. Siddharth Shetty from KSHEMA, Deralakatte participated in the conference. The invited speakers delivered the talks on present status and future prospects of stem cells in biomedicine with emphasis on orthopaedic applications.

Throughout the conference encompassing 6 scientific sessions, a total of 13 invited and 4 delegate speakers shared their data, knowledge and experience with the 160 delegates. In addition, a good number of biomedical companies participated by putting up exhibition stalls. Apart from the presentations by eminent speakers, the conference also organised the demonstration of live surgeries of orthopaedic cases performed by a team of renowned orthopaedic surgeons on 4th October 2015.

In the end, the best oral and poster presentations carrying a cash award of Rs. 5000/- each were presented to the delegates Dr. Apoorv Jain and Dr. P. Anbuchezhian, Tejasvini Hospital & SSIOT, respectively. A certificate of merit for poster presentation was given to Dr. K. S. Kushalappa, Dept. of Orthopaedics, KSHEMA.

Finally, the overall feedback of the conference was highly positive based on the responses provided by the delegates in the evaluation questionnaires.
