Second edition of Nitte International Film Festival inaugurated

Mangaluru: The second edition of Nitte International Film Festival (NIFF), presented by Nitte-Deemed-to-be University, kicked off on April 16 in Mangaluru's Bharat Cinemas in Bharat Mall.

The festival was declared open by the renowned film maker and playwright Sadananda Suvarna, known for producing the critically acclaimed 1977 Kannada film, Ghatashraddha. The Vice-Chancellor of Nitte, Dr Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, presided over the function.

NIFF aims to showcase critically acclaimed cinema from across India and the world to the public in Mangaluru, while providing a platform for film-makers and film-viewers to have a conversation.

In his inaugural address, Sadananda Suvarna stressed the need for films which can inspire and educate the viewers. "There is no dearth of spectators in the theatres for good films," he said.

Recognising the lacuna in Mangaluru’s arts and culture landscape for a major film festival, NIFF was launched in 2017 as a student-led festival. This year, the four-day film festival, organised by students of Nitte Institute of Communication, will see about 60 film screenings from different languages including Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali, Gujarati, Odia, Tamil, Chinese, Czech, German and French. The festival is free and open to the public.

Apart from watching critically acclaimed cinema, audience will also get to interact with filmmakers. There will be a discussion with each filmmaker after the screening of their film. There will also be longer discussions including a session with R S Prasanna on his film Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, a session on Media, Politics and Society with Ramesh Sharma and N Manu Chakravarthy, and a panel discussion on Caste and Cinema.

Aspiring film-makers have more to look forward to at the festival. There will be a masterclass on cinematography by national-award winning veteran cinematographer G S Bhaskar.
