Guest lecture and vision screening program - NGSMIPS

The Department of Pharmacy Practice, NGSM Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences organized a guest lecture on “EYE DONATION AWARENESS” by Dr. Vijay Pai, Professor & Head, Dept. of Ophthalmology, Justice KS Hegde Hospital, Mangaluru on 10th September 2019 in the Seminar Hall (III Floor, New Block) of the college. The aim of the guest lecture was to create awareness about the importance of eye donation and motivate the staff and students to donate their eyes. Dr. C.S Shastry, Principal, welcomed the gathering and introduced the speaker.

Dr. Vijay Pai said blindness is one of the major public health problems in the developing countries, including India. A total number of 12 million people are suffering from blindness in India and 15000 eyes are collected every year. He said, in majority of the cases, the problem of vision loss could be addressed through eye donation. He captured the attention of the gathering by supporting his presentation with appealing videos on corneal transplantation surgery.


Followed by the guest lecture, a “VISION SCREENING PROGRAM” was arranged in the Seminar Hall. A total of 56 people were screened and those identified with refractory vision errors were advised to consult the Ophthalmology Department. 32 people voluntarily signed the consent form to donate their eyes. Three postgraduate students from the Dept. of Ophthalmology, KSHEMA proficiently carried out the vision screening. The teaching, non-teaching staff and students participated in the guest lecture and the screening program.



Dr. Vijay Pai was felicitated by Dr. C. S. Shastry, Principal. Dr. Juno J Joel, Asst. Professor & Head, Dept. of Pharmacy Practice proposed the vote of thanks. Dr. Uday Venkat Mateti conducted the proceedings, ably supported by his colleagues Mr. Bharath Raj, Dr. Treesa, Mr. Nandakumar, Dr. Anjaly Vijayan, Dr. Viany BC and Dr. Sharad Chand.
