The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBSC) of Nitte (Deemed to be University) organized a one-day workshop on ‘Biosafety Management in Healthcare and Research’ on 27th September 2019 at Justice K. S. Hegde Charitable Hospital, Deralakatte.
The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. (Dr.) K. S. Gangadhara Somayaji, Registrar, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University). In his inaugural address, Prof. Somayaji highlighted the necessity for strict implementation of biosafety guidelines, rules and procedures to ensure adequate safety to the researchers, health care personnel and the environment. Presiding over the function, Prof. (Dr.) B. Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, Vice Chancellor, Nitte University emphasized the role of researchers and biosafety professionals in reviewing and improving the biosafety standards. Prof. (Dr.) K. S. Sreepada, DBT nominee of IBSC was the Guest of Honour. The resource persons for this workshop were Dr. Vandana K. E., Professor, KMC, Manipal; Dr. Indrani Karunasagar, Director (R&D); Major Dr. Shivakumar Hiremath, Medical Superintendent; Dr. M. N. Venugopal, External Expert, IBSC and Dr. Praveen Kumar Shetty, Dy. Director (Research). Prof. (Dr.) A. M. Mirajkar, Vice Dean, KSHEMA and Prof. (Dr.) U. S. Krishna Nayak, Principal, ABSMIDS graced the occasion with their presence. Prof. Dr. Alka Kulkarni, Registrar, Nitte (Deemed to be University) delivered the welcome address and outlined the significance of organizing this biosafety workshop. Dr. A. Veena Shetty, Member Secretary, IBSC and Addl. Professor, KSHEMA proposed the vote of thanks. Dr. Shama Rao, KSHEMA compered the program. A total of 194 delegates attended the workshop including the faculty, PG/PhD students and research scholars of constituent colleges of Nitte (Deemed to be University) and selected delegates from Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Mangalore University, Yenepoya Medical College (YMC) and Yenepoya Research Centre (YRC), College of Fisheries, St. Aloysius College, KVG Dental College & Hospital, Sullia etc.
