Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences has taken the initiative to celebrate the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale. As part of the celebrations, the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecological Nursing in association with NUINS Alumni, organized an International Seminar on “Midwifery Practices in Ireland” on 7th November 2019 at Chintana Hall, Justice K.S Hegde Charitable Hospital.
Dr. Savitha D’Souza, Staff Midwife at Coombs Woman and Infant University Hospital, Ireland was the Resource person. She deliberated on the topic ‘Midwifery practices in Ireland’, where she compared the midwifery practice in India and Ireland. She informed that the pregnant mother could express the colostrum after 38 weeks of gestational period and store it in the home refrigerator. During the post natal period, the same could be given to the newborn. A total of 16 teaching faculty, 38 Staff nurses, and 51 Undergraduate students were present for the seminar. The program was presided by Dr. Fatima D’silva, Principal, NUINS. The participants gained an understanding of antenatal care and education rendered by the staff midwife in Ireland. It was felt that some of these practices especially child birth plan, could be incorporated in our settings.
