The NSS unit of NGSM Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences observed World Heart Day on 29th September 2021. A guest lecture on the topic ‘Cardiac manifestations of COVID and Prevention of heart diseases’ by Dr. Subramanyam K, Professor & Head, Dept. of Cardiology, K S Hegde Medical Academy, Mangalore was organised on this occasion.

Prof. Dr. R Narayana Charyulu, Vice Principal welcomed and introduced the guest to the audience. Prof. Dr. CS Shastry, Principal addressed the gathering and briefed about the importance of observing the World Heart Day and advised the students to develop and maintain healthy habits to live happily without any ailments. This was followed by a very informative and interactive presentation by Dr. Subramanyam. He discussed a few case studies related to heart problems provoked by COVID-19. He also advised the audience to follow the COVID-19 guidelines to keep themselves healthy & safe. He said, “The secret to good health is a healthy lifestyle achieved through a healthy diet, good sleep, regular exercise and giving up unhealthy habits such as smoking & consuming alcohol”.

News from NUINS | NSS day celebration

The NSS unit of Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences organized NSS day celebration on virtual platform on 24th September 2021. Prof. Dr. Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, Vice Chancellor, Nitte DU delivered the opening remarks and appreciated the good work of the NSS unit.

Mr. Shashi Kumar, NSS Coordinator Nitte DU addressed the students and explained the importance of NSS. On this occasion, an intercollegiate e-poster competition on the topic, Nipah Virus was held. Dr. Nanjesh Kumar, Head, Dept. of Community Medicine, KSHEMA and Mrs. Neethi Shetty, English Lecturer, Nitte DU were the evaluators for the e-poster competition.

Ms. Priya Seagal of MSc (MIT), KSHEMA secured the first place; Second place was shared by Mr. Dawa Sherpa and Ms. Medha Shetty of BSc (A&OTT), KSHEMA. An Essay Competition on the topic “Azaadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” was also organized and a total of 15 essays were received. The evaluating team of NUINS comprising Prof. Dr. Fatima Dsilva, Principal, NSS program Officers - Mrs. Suchithra BS and Mr. Sukesh Shetty declared Mr. Vineeth Raj of BPharm, NGSMIPS as the winner. Ms. Asna Anwar of BSc (MIT), KSHEMA was awarded the second place.

A total of 82 NSS volunteers participated in this program.

A program on ‘The Use of Nitrous Oxide Sedation in Pediatric Dentistry’ on 23rd September 2021 | ABSMIDS

The Department of Pediatric & Preventive Dentistry, A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences conducted a program on ‘The Use of Nitrous Oxide Sedation in Pediatric Dentistry’ on 23rd September 2021. The workshop began with the inauguration and lamp lighting ceremony and a welcome speech by the Principal & Dean, Prof (Dr.) U S Krishna Nayak. This was followed by a Lecture, interactive session and demonstration of nitrous oxide sedation by Prof (Dr.) Sumalatha Shetty, Department of Anaesthesiology, KSHEMA.

News from KSHEMA | first episode of the monthly academic program “NITTE ANAESTHESIA EDUCATION SERIES” was successfully held on 19th August 2021

The Department of Anaesthesiology & Critical Care, KSHEMA is proud to announce that the first episode of the monthly academic program “NITTE ANAESTHESIA EDUCATION SERIES” was successfully held on 19th August 2021. The event will be held on the third Thursday of every month from 3:00 to 5:00 PM https://meet.google.com/vwt-ziyc-qwa.

With the ongoing pandemic, this event was conducted online.

Dr Sripada G Mehandale, Professor & HoD welcomed faculty and post graduate students to the program. Dr Ramkumar Venkateswaran, Former Professor & Head, Dept of Anaesthesiology, KMC, Manipal, was the speaker for the Master Class.

Dr Prarthana M Raj & Dr Poornima G S, III yr PG students from the Department of Anaesthesiology & Critical Care, KSHEMA presented a Case: “COPD patient coming for incidental surgery". Dr Balabhaskar S, Chairman, ISA, National Academic Committee and Dr Thrivikrama Tantry P, Professor & Head, AJIMSRC moderated the session. Dr Rajesh M C, Academic Coordinator, BMH, Calicut, was the speaker for 'Equipment of the month: Oropharyngeal and Nasopharyngeal Airway’.

More than 100 postgraduate students and faculty participated in this event of which Dr Sumalatha R Shetty, Professor is the Organising Secretary.

News from ABSMIDS | A guest lecture by Nutritionist Mrs. Jayalaxmi Shenoy

The NSS and the Dental Education Units of AB Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences conducted a guest lecture by Nutritionist Mrs. Jayalaxmi Shenoy from Bangalore titled “EAT RIGHT: WE ARE WHAT WE EAT” on 15.09.2021 at Avishkar Hall.

The program was conducted as part of the Poshan Maah Calendar 2021 - Converging towards a healthy walk through life, as directed by the Government of India, NITI Aayog’s, POSHAN Abhiyaan or National Nutrition Mission from 1st to 30th September 2021.

Dr. Kumuda Rao, Program Officer, NSS unit was the MC. The program began with a prayer by Dr. Aruna Kamath invoking the divine blessings of the Almighty. Dr. Supriya Bhat introduced the speaker. The program was presided over by Prof. Dr. US Krishna Nayak, Principal & Dean.

Dr. Rahul Bhandary addressed the gathering. Dr. Biju Thomas presented the memento to the speaker. Dr. Avaneendra Talwar proposed the vote of thanks. The program concluded with the National Anthem.

95 students and 11 staff members participated in the program.

News from NICO | Online Faculty Development Program "Graphic Design using Canva"

The NSS Unit of Nitte Institute of Communication organized an online Faculty Development Program - Graphic Design using Canva on 14th September 2021, as part of Teachers Day celebrations. The FDP was in association with the Staff Development Centre, Nitte DU.

The program involved training in graphic designing using Canva, a popular graphic design platform used to create social media posters, presentations and other visual content.

The event began with the introduction of the resource person, Prof Raviraj, Head NICO, by Ms Sadhana Deshmukh, Director, SDC. After speaking briefly on Canva, Prof Raviraj went on to demonstrate how a poster, a presentation and video is made using this software.

The program had more than 120 registrations from both teaching and non-teaching faculty from the constituent colleges of Nitte (Deemed to be University) who learnt the basics of graphic designing using Canva. The session was very interactive with several questions being raised by the participants.

The event ended with a vote of thanks by Dr Tapaswi HM, Program Officer, NSS Unit of NICO.
