Nitte: News from ABSMIDS | National Conference on Current Concepts in Oral Cancer

The Department of Oral Medicine & Radiology, ABSMIDS in association with the Indian Academy of Oral Medicine & Radiology conducted a National Conference on Current Concepts in Oral Cancer on 2nd & 3rd February 2022 on virtual platform, with support and guidance from Prof (Dr) K Vinay Kumar Reddy, President, Indian Academy of Oral Medicine & Radiology and Prof (Dr) Prashanth Shenoy K, Hon. General Secretary.

Prof (Dr) Vidya Ajila, Head, Dept. of Oral Medicine & Radiology, ABSMIDS welcomed the audience. Prof (Dr) US Krishna Nayak, Principal & Dean, ABSMIDS presided over the program and delivered the opening remarks.

Prof (Dr) Prashanth Shenoy K, Hon. General Secretary, IAOMR and HoD, OMR, Yenepoya Dental College was the guest of honour. Addressing the gathering he stressed on the importance of diagnosing Oral Cancer in the early stages and the role of the Indian Academy of Oral Medicine & Radiology in making it possible.

The inauguration of the program was followed by a guest lecture by Dr Prathima Sreenivasan, Professor & Head, Dept. of Oral Medicine & Radiology, Kannur Dental College, Kerala on ‘Early Diagnosis of Oral Cancer.’

The second speaker of the day, Prof (Dr) U Raghuraj, Professor & Head, Dept. of Radiodiagnosis, K S Hegde Medical Academy delivered a lecture on ‘Essentials of Cross- sectional Imaging in Oral Cancer’.

The guest lectures were followed by the E-poster presentation sessions which were conducted using google meet platform.

The afternoon session saw Dr Kainickal C T, Additional Professor, Head & Neck Oncology, Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram deliver a guest lecture on ‘Role of Radiotherapy in Oral Cancer’.

Day 2 of the Conference began with a session on ‘Recent Advances in Head & Neck Malignancies’ by Dr Vijith Shetty, Assoc. Professor, Dept. of Oncology, K S Hegde Medical Academy followed by a guest lecture on ‘Palliative Care in Oral Cancer’ by Dr Prajna Kini, Consultant in Palliative Care, Department of Oncology, Yen Onco Centre, Yenepoya Medical College & Hospital.

The guest lectures were followed by paper presentations by undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Dr Subhas Babu, Professor, Dept. of OMR, ABSMIDS proposed the vote of thanks. Dr Sonika Achalli, Lecturer coordinated the program and was also the MC.

There was a total of 969 registrations from delegates across the country.
51 undergraduates & 48 postgraduates presented E-posters
27 undergraduates & 50 postgraduates presented scientific papers.
Session-wise prizes were awarded for the Poster and Paper presentations.
Feedback obtained from the delegates showed an overwhelmingly positive response.

The conference was streamed live in YouTube through “Nittetube” channel.
