News from NUCSER | Peer Counsellors Training for students

The Student Wellness Centre, Nitte DU conducted a 10-hour Peer Counsellors Training for students of NUCSER spread across three months January to April 2022. The training included a total of five sessions with 2 hours of active engagement per session, conducted by the faculty of the Dept. of Psychiatry, KSHEMA and Student Wellness Centre, Nitte DU. The training was aimed at implementing supportive counselling intervention to the students by their peers. 

Prof. (Dr) Satheesh Rao, Prof. (Dr) Sreenivas Bhat from the Dept. of Psychiatry and Ms. Shreevidya, Ms. Agneita, and Mr. Aditya, Counsellors at the Student Wellness Centre were the resource persons for the sessions.

A total of 17 students representing I, II & III year BSc (Biomedical Science), I & II years MSc (Biomedical Science), MSc (Food Safety & Biotechnology), MSc (Microbiology), and MSc (Biotechnology) successfully completed the peer counsellors training. The training concluded with feedback and post-assessment from the students. 

The valedictory function was held on 1st April 2022. Prof. Dr. Anirban Chakraborty, Director, NUCSER commended the Nitte Wellness centre on its efforts in improving student mental health and encouraged the students to start their journey of peer counselling. He also opined that those empowered with this training will play a pivotal role in providing peer support.
