News from NUCSER | An outreach program on “Bamboo Sapling Plantation” on the Payaswani River bank under the “Sustainable Development Goals” initiative of the University

Under the framework of United Nation’s “Sustainable Development Goals” Nitte has been putting conspicuous efforts towards sustainable development through teaching, research, outreach and partnerships. Under this initiative, particularly Goal number 14-Life Below Water, the Youth Red Cross Unit of NUCSER in association with the Nitte University Green Initiative Programme (NUGIP) and Iriyanni Govt. Vocational Higher Secondary School, Muliyar, conducted an outreach program for bamboo sapling plantation on the banks of Payaswani River on 2nd July 2022.

UG, PG and PhD Students along with faculty members volunteered for the program. Mr. Sajeevan Madaparambathu, Principal, Govt. HSS, Iriyanni and the NSS Unit of the school provided local support and seedlings. A total of 40 bamboo saplings were planted on the river bank, which was followed by a formal function at the school. An interactive session on rare freshwater turtles was conducted by Mr. Nandan Vijayakumar, a wildlife conservationist.

Prof. Dr. Smitha Hegde, Dy. Director, NUCSER, proposed the vote of thanks and presented tokens of gratitude and appreciation to the resource person and the organizers of the program on behalf of the institute.

Dr Madhu K Mani, Scientist G-I, NUCSER coordinated the program.
