The Dept. of Paediatric & Preventive Dentistry, ABSMIDS in association with the Departments of Anaesthesiology & Critical Care and Paediatrics, KS Hegde Medical Academy conducted a value-added course on ‘Safe Sedation and Emergency Management in Paediatric Dentistry’. This value-added course is conducted every year in the month of October for the period of 4 days (32 hours) which is inclusive of AHA-certified Basic Life Support training.
17 delegates including postgraduates, professors and consultant paediatric dentists, from various parts of Karnataka, neighbouring States of Kerala, Tamil Nadu & Maharashtra enrolled for the program. The event was coordinated by Prof. (Dr) Kavita Rai, Dept. of Paediatric & Preventive Dentistry, ABSMIDS.
Day 1 witnessed the inaugural ceremony which commenced with the welcome address by Prof. (Dr.) Manju R, HoD, Paediatric & Preventive Dentistry. Prof. (Dr.) US Krishna Nayak, Principal & Dean, ABSMIDS presided over the function.
The course kick-started with the module on AHA-certified Basic Life Support training by Prof. Dr. Sripada Mehandale, Head, Dept. of Anaesthesiology, introduced the Basic Life Support techniques to the delegates; Dr. Gayathri Bhat, Professor, Dept. of Anaesthesiology, KSHEMA and Dr. Sajan, Dept. of Emergency Medicine, KMC Mangalore demonstrated the basic life support techniques on both the adult & pediatric mannequins. The delegates were then asked to perform the basic life support techniques on the mannequins, based on which they were assessed.
Day 2 commenced with a ‘Recall and Road map’ session by the course coordinator, Dr. Kavita Rai, after which the Module 2 on Emergency management in Pediatric dental clinic was dealt with. Dr. Gayathri Bhat, Dr. Murali Shankar Bhat, Dr. Rashmi Soori and Dr. Nisha Shetty from the Dept.of Anaesthesiology and Dr. Swathi Rao & Dr. Niharika Shetty from the Dept. of Paediatrics were the resource persons.
The hands-on workshop on emergency equipments was conducted by Dr. Swathi Rao and the hands-on workshop for emergency drugs was conducted by Dr. Niharika Shetty.
Dr. Prajna Nayak, Sr. Lecturer, Dept. of Pediatric & Preventive Dentistry delivered a lecture on “Management of Local Anaesthesia Toxicity”. This was followed by lectures on “Anaphylaxis and Bronchospasm” by Dr. Swathi Rao and “Foreign Body Aspiration” by Dr. Rashmi Soori.
A hands-on training of the delegates on “Emergency management of paediatric patients in the dental clinic” was conducted. The delegates were divided into groups of five and were given emergency case scenarios wherein they had to make the correct diagnosis, formulate appropriate treatment plan and act accordingly.
Dr. Rashmi Soori, Asst. Professor & Dr. Nisha Shetty, Sr. Resident, Dept. of Anaesthesiology, demonstrated the technique of venepuncture and drug delivery by intravenous and intramuscular injections.
Day 3 started with a lecture on “Nitrous oxide sedation”. Delegates were introduced to inhalation sedation, its objectives, indications, equipment required, problems associated with sedation and sedation monitoring through lectures by Dr. Kavita Rai, Dr. Sripada Mehandale and Dr. Rashmi Soori.
A live demonstration of Nitrous oxide sedation on pediatric dental patients was carried out in the Dept. of Pediatric & Preventive dentistry under the guidance of the faculty from the Dept. of Anaesthesiology.
The fourth and final day of the course dealt with Module 4 which covered Oral Sedation. Dr Meghna Bhandary, Sr. Lecturer, Dept. of Pediatric & Preventive Dentistry through her lecture introduced the delegates to oral sedation.
Dr. Murali Shankar Bhat & Dr. Nisha Shetty gave lectures on indications, contradictions and commonly available drugs used in oral sedation.
A live demonstration of dental treatment on pediatric dental patient under oral midazolam was demonstrated to the delegates in the minor OT of the Dept. of Pediatric & Preventive Dentistry.
Dr. Kavita Rai and Dr. Amarshree Shetty, Professors, Dept. of Pediatric & Preventive dentistry gave lectures on “Dental Treatment under Oral Sedation”. Dr. Manjunath Kamath & Dr. Sumalatha Shetty, Professors, Dept. of Anaesthesiology spoke on “IV sedation & General Anaesthesia” and “Legal considerations for sedation” respectively.
The valedictory function was held in the Department of Pediatric & Preventive Dentistry which was presided over, by Prof. (Dr.) Manju R. Certificates were presented to the delegates. The delegates shared their experience with the audience.
Dr. Kavita Rai proposed the vote of thanks, thereby marking the successful completion of this value-added course.
