News from NICO | Workshop on Photography

A Workshop on Photography for NSS students who were on campus for a week-long National Integration Camp was conducted at Nitte Institute of Communication by Prof Raviraj, Head of the Institute on 19th February, 2024.

Topics included Basics of Photography - Understanding Light - ISO - Aperture - Shutter Speed - Composition - Rule of Thirds - Golden Ratio

A lot of questions and a lot of curiosity marked the interactive session.




News from NIPT | Webinar on “Slaying the Dragon in Clinical Research for Physiotherapy in India”

The Alumni Relations Cell of Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy along with Institutional Research Cell organized an Online Webinar on “Slaying the Dragon in Clinical Research for Physiotherapy in India” with Dr. Mohammad Sidiq, Assoc. Professor, Dept. of Physiotherapy, Galgotias University, Greater Noida as the resource person on 24th February 2024.

Mr. Rakesh Krishna Kovela, Coordinator, Alumni Relations Cell and Research Cell, welcomed the gathering. Prof. Dr. Purusotham Chippala, NIPT introduced speaker to the participants. Dr. Sidiq an alumnus of 2001 batch BPT, explained the problems faced by researchers in India, ways to target the problems related to trial registration, process of registration in CTRI, PROSPERO etc. He also emphasized the collaborative research perspective in India. Participants were briefed about trial registration process and importance of team work in research in Indian scenario. 35 students participated in the webinar.

International Mother Language Day 2024

UNESCO has declared 21st February as International Mother Language Day in 1999. Since then, this day is celebrated to encourage the use of mother languages as a tool to preserve and transmit culture. Nitte University celebrated International Mother Language Day on 21st February 2024 at K S Hegde Auditorium.

Prof (Dr) B Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, Vice President (ISR & CRL), Nitte University, presided over the formal event. Dr T K Ravindran, Retired English Professor, SVS College, Bantwal was the Chief Guest and Ms. Anitha Naik, In-charge, Rani Abbakka Online Library, All America Tulu Association (AATA) was the Guest of Honour.

Students of Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences, belonging to different states, dressed in traditional attire greeted the audience in their native tongues.

Dr Ravindran, who has been an English teacher for the last 35 years, is credited with having translated Sahitya Academy Award winning Tulu novel, Nanajjeru Sude Thirgayeru into Malayalam and English and the first writer to translate a Tulu work into Malayalam. He has also translated Poornachandra Tejaswi’s Parisara Kathegalu into Malayalam. In his address, he called upon students to understand the importance of preserving native languages and ensuring that it is handed down to the next generation.

The day also saw the finale of the Value-Added Course in Yakshagana offered by Nitte Institute of Communication, under the aegis of Nitte University.

The value-added course which was open to staff and students of Nitte University saw students learning the basics of Yakshagana under the tutelage of Guru Ramachandra Yellur. Students presented Krishna Leele, an hour and half long performance and impressed the audience with their grace and oratory, despite being amateurs.

Prof. Raviraj, Head, Nitte Institute of Communication welcomed the gathering, Dr. Suchitra, Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences rendered the vote of thanks. Program Coordinator Dr. Sayeegeetha, I/c Head, Dept. of Humanities and Mr. Prakash K, Coordinator, Value Added Course were present.

News from NRAM Polytechnic, Nitte | Annual Special Camp 2024

The NSS Unit of NRAM Polytechnic, Nitte conducted a six-day Annual Special Camp with the theme Youth for Science and Scientific Temperament from 21st to 26th February 2024 at the Govt. Higher Primary School, Bondukumer, Ajekar, Karkala. The camp was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Shivaprasad Shetty M, Dept. of Chemistry, NMAMIT, Nitte. Dr. Shetty pointed out the purpose of service in life and the importance of the NSS Unit. Sri. Venkatramana Prasad, HoD Mechanical, NRAM Polytechnic, Nitte presided over the function.

Various activities like Personality Development, Values in Life, Importance of Service, Emergency Treatment were conducted for the students at the camp. 45 students actively participated in Shramadana and Cultural Events.

Sri. Gurudath Prabhu, Sr. Grade Lecturer, Dept. of ECE & NSS Coordinator; NSS student leaders Ms Prapthi, IV Sem CSE and Mr Ayush, IV Sem EEE coordinated the six-day function.

Community Health Camp at Hirekeruru and Nellikoppa, Soraba Taluk

 Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital conducted a rural health outreach camp at Hirekeruru and Nellikoppa villages in Soraba Taluk on 24th & 25th February 2024. The camp was organized with the objective of delivering free healthcare to rural populations. Over 600 patients benefited from the initiative, receiving general health check-ups, medical consultations and diagnostic services. The healthcare team offered personalized guidance on disease prevention, lifestyle modification and treatment options.






News from NIPT | RVPGCON 2024 - Unlearn to Relearn - Adapting to new realities

41 students & 4 faculty of NIPT along with 3 students & one faculty of University of Santo Thomas, Philippines participated in 'RVPGCON 2024' organised by RV College of Physiotherapy Bengaluru from 15th to 17th February 2024. The theme of the conference was 'Unlearn to Relearn - Adapting to new realities'.

The students attended various pre-conference workshops of different electives which had in-depth hands-on and skill-based training sessions. All the student delegates of NIPT & UST, Philippines presented papers and posters at the conference. 
  1. Prof. Dr. Dhanesh Kumar K U, Principal, was conferred the prestigious ‘Award of Excellence in Professional Mentoring’ for his invaluable contribution towards the field of Physiotherapy. He was the Guest of Honour for the valedictory ceremony of RVPGCON. 
  2.  Dr. Saumya Srivastava, Associate Professor, was invited as the resource person for the conference. She delivered a talk titled ‘Dysfunctional breathing, Diaphragm and Core – Probing their role in Chronic Low Back Pain’. 
  3.  Mr. Joshua Emmanuel Mendres, student of UST, Manila, Philippines won the 2nd Prize in Poster Presentation under PG Category. 
  4.  Ms. Kavya Bhat, student of NIPT, won the 2nd Prize in Poster Presentation under Interns category.





News from NIPT | Cleanliness drive in association with Ramakrishna Mission - Swachh Mangaluru Abhiyan

Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy and Ramakrishna Mission Swachh Mangaluru Abhiyan, led the monthly cleanliness drive on 11th February 2024 at the Service Bus stand, State Bank at 7.15 am.

38 students including Mr. Charles Nermal from Santo Tomas University, Philippines and NIPT faculty members Dr. Dhanesh Kumar KU, Dr. Purusotham Chippala, Mr. Nityal Kumar, Swachh Sena Coordinator Ms. Neha Shetty participated in the drive which ended at 9.30 am.

The event was coordinated by Ms. Jerlin and Ms. Ayushi.








News from NIPT | Fee physiotherapy camp at Sabarimala

Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy in association with the Indian Association of Physiotherapy (IAP), Kerala and Pathanamthitta Rehabilitation & Palliative Centre Society (PRPC) organised a free physiotherapy camp at Sabarimala during the Makara Jyothi period from 6th to 12th January 2024. The Ayyappa devotees coming to the Sannidanam barefoot, through Pulimedu, Erumeli and Pampa usually suffer from physical ailments such as severe calf pain, ligament tear, knee pain, back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain and severe muscle cramps. Understanding this, the Physiotherapy healthcare fraternity provided a Physiotherapy Centre at ‘Emergency Medical Care Centre 7 (EMC 7)’, at Sabari Peedam.

Principal Prof. Dr Dhanesh Kumar K U, Dr Jayesh Chandran, Dr Krishna Prasad from NIPT along with other physiotherapy faculty joined the camp on 6th January 2024. An average of 100 devotees were treated per day at EMC 7 by the team.

Around 670 devotees from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, North Kanara and Kerala availed this free service.

News from NMAMIT | Two-day workshop on 'Generative AI in Teaching, Learning & Research - Challenges Ahead

The Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Artificial Intelligence & Data Science in association with IQAC and Staff Development Center, Nitte DU organized a two-day workshop on 'Generative AI in Teaching, Learning & Research - Challenges Ahead' on 15th & 16th February, 2024. The workshop comprised of 6 technical sessions.

Dr. S. Suresh Kumar, CTO, Brain Tower, Oman inaugurated the program. He highlighted the significance of Generative AI and its vast applications in different domains including in education. Dr. Niranjan Chiplunkar, Principal, NMAMIT presided over the function and congratulated the departments for organizing such a workshop. He requested all faculty to attend all the sessions to gain some insights into Generative AI.

Dr. Srinivasa Pai P, Head, Dept. of Mechanical Engg., Convenor of the workshop welcomed the gathering and briefed about the significance and the schedule of the workshop. Dr. Venugopala P S, Head, Dept. of AI & DS, introduced the Chief Guest. Dr. Vidya S M., IQAC Coordinator proposed the vote of thanks. Ms. Ankitha Shetty, Faculty, AI & DS compered the program.

The workshop had 30 participants including external participants from nearby colleges.



News from NUINS | Tarang 2K24

The Annual Day of Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences, TARANG 2K24 was held on 17th February 2024 at the Nitte University Grounds, Paneer campus. Chief Guest Dr BV Kathyayini, Principal, NIMHANS College of Nursing, Bangalore in her address emphasized the need for growth in professional life. Prof. (Dr). Harsha Halahalli, Registrar, Nitte (DU) in his presidential address emphasized the value of perseverance & credibility and advised the students to find success for themselves, serve as excellent ambassadors and bring fame to their Alma Mater. He also commended the faculty and Principal for their ongoing efforts to carry out new action plans to raise the standards of the institution.

Mrs. Cleeta Pinto, Principal, School of Nursing welcomed the gathering. Prof (Dr.) Fatima Dsilva presented the Annual Report of the college. Prof. Philomena Fernandes, Dept. of OBG Nursing and Mrs.Varija, staff were felicitated for their committed and dedicated service to the college. Students with meritorious academic achievements in the 2023 university exams were recognized with awards and certificates. The winners of Kalavibhav, Kalatilak, Kalabhiruchi and Sportif Jour - the annual sports event were also awarded for their extra-curricular performances.

Special Health Camp in Harishe and Chandragutti, Soraba

 A special health camp was organized by Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital in the villages of Harishe and Chandragutti, Soraba Taluk on 23rd February 2024. The camp offered free medical consultations and general health check-ups, ensuring access to essential healthcare services for the rural community. A total of 673 patients benefited from the initiative, receiving medical attention, guidance and support from the hospital’s healthcare professionals.



News from ABSMIDS | Professional Development Program on “Oral Mucosal Lesions: A Diagnostic Conundrum”

The Department of Oral Medicine & Radiology, A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences conducted a CDE and Professional Development Program on “Oral Mucosal Lesions: A Diagnostic Conundrum” on 20th February 2024. The resource person was Dr Keerthilatha Pai, CoE and Professor, Dept. of Dentistry, Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences, Gangtok, Sikkim.

Prof. (Dr.) U S Krishna Nayak formally inaugurated the program. Dr Vidya Ajila welcomed the gathering and Dr Ananya Madiyal introduced the resource person.

Dr Keerthilatha Pai delivered a lecture on “Oral Mucosal Lesions.” Her talk was followed by a Quiz. The vote of thanks was proposed by Prof. Dr G Subhas Babu.

The program coordinated by Dr. Ananya Madiyal was conducted in hybrid mode under the guidance of Prof. (Dr.) U. S. Krishna Nayak, Principal & Dean and Prof (Dr) Vidya Ajila, HoD, Oral Medicine & Radiology.

Delegates included III & IV BDS students, interns from ABSMIDS & neighbouring colleges in Mangalore and faculty & postgraduates of Oral Medicine & Radiology department from various dental institutes across Karnataka. Around 206 delegates participated in the online program.

The IV BDS Part 1 students of ABSMIDS participated in an online quiz on the topic ‘Oral Mucosal Lesions’ conducted over a period of 4 days from 19th to 22nd February 2024. The winners were presented with a certificate of merit.

News from NUINS | SPORTIF JOUR 2024

‘Sportif Jour’ the annual sports event of Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences was held on 15th February 2024 at Nitte Grounds, Deralakatte from 7.00 am to 4.00 pm.

Mr. Bhakshith Salian, national level athlete and Khelo India Athletic coach, Mangaluru was the chief guest of the day. The program began with a march-past by the students and the chief guest received the guard of honor. Mr. Salian hoisted the flag and declared the athletic meet open. Ms. Jeshvina, III B.Sc (N) welcomed the guests, participants and the gathering. The student representatives lit the sports flame which was followed by oath-taking administered by Ms. Jeshna of IV B.Sc (N).

Mr. Salian narrated how his persistent and dedicated struggle landed him in the enviable position that he is holding today and urged the students to actively participate in sports activities along with their academics. In the presidential address Prof (Dr) Fatima D`silva, Principal, NUINS lauded the achievement of Mr. Bhakshith and advised the students to draw inspiration from sports achievers like him. She presented a memento as a token of gratitude to Mr. Bhaskhith Salian.

The Individual Championship in the men’s section was bagged by Mr. Owsin of

first year GNM and in the women’s sections it was bagged by Ms. Bhavya of 2nd year GNM. The overall championship was bagged by 2nd year GNM students.

Reproductive and Sexual Health Awareness Program

A health awareness program was conducted on 22nd February 2024 at Ira Thalipadpu Anganwadi by the Department of Community Medicine, KSHEMA. Local families were educated on various aspects of reproductive and sexual health, including menstrual hygiene, family planning and contraception, sexually transmitted diseases, cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination, as well as antenatal and infant care. The initiative aimed to enhance community knowledge and promote healthy practices related to reproductive and sexual health.

News from NUINS | Orientation Program for the V & VI Batch of Denmark students

Three students from Denmark visited Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences, Mangalore for a five-week internship program from 30th January to 2nd March 2024. Another student also from Denmark, joined the Internship program from 6th to 16th February 2024. The inauguration of the program took place on 5th February 2024 at the Learning Center, 3rd Floor, NUINS. Prof. Dr. Sabitha Nayak, Vice Principal, NUINS presided over the event. The heads of departments outlined the expectations and learning outcomes for the Danish students. Mrs. Jincy K S, International Student Coordinator, delivered the vote of thanks and served as the program's host.

Medical Camp at Talakala, Kolambe

 A free medical camp was organized by Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital at Talakala, near Bajpe, Kolambe on 18th February 2024 to provide accessible healthcare services to the local community. Medical consultations were provided to 76 patients. Specialists and healthcare staff from the hospital participated in the initiative, ensuring that residents received quality medical attention and guidance.



News from NUCSER | A Day as a Scientist

NUCSER hosted A Day as a Scientist series, for 104 first year Pre-University college students from science background and 3 teachers of Dr. Nitte Shankara Adyanthaya Memorial PU College, Nanthoor, Mangaluru on 27th January 2024. Faculty and research scholars at NUCSER introduced the students to a wide range of research areas within biomedical science, fostering a comprehensive understanding of the field and introduced them to concepts of handling microorganisms, basics of bio & nanotechnology, applications of biomedical science in environmental health, food technology and handling non-mammalian animal models like zebrafish and drosophila.




News from NUCSER | GOONJ 2024

NUCSER’s most awaited event of the year, the annual cultural fest, Goonj 2024 was held on 12th & 13th February 2024 at the University Auditorium, Paneer Campus based on the theme “The Enchanted Forest”. Goonj 2024 began with invocation seeking divine blessings followed by traditional lamp lighting ritual by the dignitaries. Dr. Gururaj H Kidiyoor, Director, JKSHIM, Nitte was the chief guest for the inaugural function. Dr. Smitha Hegde, Dy. Director, NUCSER welcomed the gathering and Dr. Praveen Rai, Student Welfare In-charge introduced the Chief Guest.

Dr. Gururaj H Kidiyoor, appreciated the students for their active participation and showcasing their talents in various activities of the university. He highlighted the good and bad effects of social media on the current generation and how it is relevant to remain social in today’s context. Prof. Dr. Anirban Chakraborty, Director, NUCSER spoke about the achievements of the students and emphasised on the need for such events to unlock the creative potential of students. Ms. Pereira Danica, President, Student Council expressed gratitude to all participants, organizers and sponsors in her vote of thanks.

Following the inaugural event, a series of fun-filled activities were conducted, wherein four groups namely Taal, Dhun, Raag and Swar competed with each other. Events such as pre-Goonj reel projection, listen up, mad ads, mock press, movie spoof, Mr and Ms. Goonj, turn it up, shazam and debate were held at the University auditorium. Other competitions including rangoli, face painting, wealth out of waste, cooking without fire, costume designing etc were held at NUCSER. The students, who have been instrumental in creating a good buzz about NUCSER in the social media platforms through their creative posts, were felicitated with awards and prizes. Goonj 2024 was a tremendous success, with the participation of the entire student community and teaching & non-teaching staff of NUCSER.
