UNESCO has declared 21st February as International Mother Language Day in 1999. Since then, this day is celebrated to encourage the use of mother languages as a tool to preserve and transmit culture. Nitte University celebrated International Mother Language Day on 21st February 2024 at K S Hegde Auditorium.
Prof (Dr) B Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, Vice President (ISR & CRL), Nitte University, presided over the formal event. Dr T K Ravindran, Retired English Professor, SVS College, Bantwal was the Chief Guest and Ms. Anitha Naik, In-charge, Rani Abbakka Online Library, All America Tulu Association (AATA) was the Guest of Honour.
Students of Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences, belonging to different states, dressed in traditional attire greeted the audience in their native tongues.
Dr Ravindran, who has been an English teacher for the last 35 years, is credited with having translated Sahitya Academy Award winning Tulu novel, Nanajjeru Sude Thirgayeru into Malayalam and English and the first writer to translate a Tulu work into Malayalam. He has also translated Poornachandra Tejaswi’s Parisara Kathegalu into Malayalam. In his address, he called upon students to understand the importance of preserving native languages and ensuring that it is handed down to the next generation.
The day also saw the finale of the Value-Added Course in Yakshagana offered by Nitte Institute of Communication, under the aegis of Nitte University.
The value-added course which was open to staff and students of Nitte University saw students learning the basics of Yakshagana under the tutelage of Guru Ramachandra Yellur. Students presented Krishna Leele, an hour and half long performance and impressed the audience with their grace and oratory, despite being amateurs.
Prof. Raviraj, Head, Nitte Institute of Communication welcomed the gathering, Dr. Suchitra, Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences rendered the vote of thanks. Program Coordinator Dr. Sayeegeetha, I/c Head, Dept. of Humanities and Mr. Prakash K, Coordinator, Value Added Course were present.
