News from NUCSER | Concern for Ocean Health: NUCSER’s public awareness program

As a part of the Sustainable Development Goal initiatives of the University and the commitment of the institute towards protection of life below water, NUCSER staff and students conducted a unique roadshow/awareness event on Ocean Health- Our Actions and Our Future on 26th January, 2024 at the Fiza by Nexus Mall. Three premiere organizations namely Nitte DU, Regional Centre of ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute and College of Fisheries, Mangalore came together to convey an important message on how protection of oceans is the need of the hour and how our actions, if not corrected, will have disastrous consequences in future, in the light of the rapid changes in climatic conditions that the planet Earth is experiencing.

Vice Chancellor of Nitte DU Prof. Dr. M.S. Moodithaya inaugurated the event by symbolically releasing fish into the water in the presence of Prof. Dr. Harsha Halahalli, Registrar, Nitte DU; Prof. Dr. H. N. Anjaneyappa, Dean, College of Fisheries; Dr. Sujitha Thomas, Head, Regional Centre of ICAR-CMFRI and Prof. Dr. Anirban Chakraborty, Director of NUCSER. Dr. Rajesh KM, Principal Scientist, ICAR-CMFRI and Dr. Mridula Rajesh, Professor & NSS Coordinator of College of Fisheries, were also present.

The activities of the event aimed at addressing important issues pertaining to preservation and conservation of marine health through fun-filled programs that included skits performed by students of NUCSER and College of Fisheries, Mangalore on Mangrove Conservation, Save our Sharks and Menace of Plastic Pollution of Sea. The event also witnessed flash mobs by the students and quiz on marine topics for the general public.
