News from NUCSER | From Nitte University to Global Research: Rasik’s PhD Journey begins at The University of Texas at Dallas

Nitte University Centre for Science Education and Research (NUCSER) proudly celebrates the remarkable achievement of its alumnus, Rasik Dhakal, a graduate of the BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science program (2019-2022). Rasik has embarked on an exciting academic journey, joining the PhD program in the Department of Bioengineering at the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science, University of Texas at Dallas.

The program, known for its interdisciplinary approach that bridges engineering and life sciences, is a perfect match for Rasik’s aspirations to address critical biomedical challenges. Under the guidance of Dr. Dingal, Rasik will focus on zebrafish lineage tracing, while his work with Dr. Cao will explore evolutionary developmental biology using Ciona intestinalis. These projects aim to advance knowledge in developmental signaling pathways and evolutionary mechanisms. The bioengineering program at UT Dallas provides a robust foundation in systems biology and biomechanics, while its collaboration with UT Southwestern offers unique opportunities for clinical and translational research. This synergy aligns perfectly with Rasik’s research interests, paving the way for meaningful contributions to developmental biology and bioengineering.

News from KSHEMA | Silver Jubilee Celebrations

The Silver Jubilee Celebrations of KS Hegde Medical Academy was held on 9th November 2024 at Nitte Grounds, Deralakatte. The program was formally inaugurated by Sri. Shripad Yesso Naik, Hon’ble Minister of State for New & Renewable Energy, GoI and Justice N Santhosh Hegde, Former Judge of Supreme Court India & Former Lokayukta, Karnataka State.

A special video presentation highlighting the key milestones and achievements of the college during the last 25 years was displayed. Cultural performances showcased the vibrant talent of the students. Teaching & non-teaching staff associated with the organization since inception were felicitated.

NIA student Pasang won the First prize in an Urban Sketching contest organized by the Deputy Commissioner of Mangaluru's office. The competition was a key event within the office's Heritage Week program. Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan, IAS, presented the award.



News from NICO | Lights, Camera, Inspiration: Students of Nitte Institute of Communication visit IFFI Goa 2024

A group of 23 filmmaking students of Nitte Institute of Communication (NICO) attended the prestigious International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2024 in Goa. This golden opportunity allowed them to immerse themselves in the world of cinema, interact with celebrated filmmakers and gain practical insights into the craft and industry of filmmaking.

The students were privileged to attend enlightening sessions conducted by renowned personalities, including actors Manoj Bajpayee, Anupam Kher, Randeep Hooda, Ranbir Kapoor, Nagarjuna and Naga Chaitanya. They also had the rare chance to learn from acclaimed filmmakers like Mani Ratnam, Rana Daggubati and Tisca Chopra. These interactions provided an invaluable glimpse into the creative processes, challenges and trends shaping contemporary cinema.

The festival showcased a diverse array of films from across the globe. Among the standout screenings were films that had won accolades at Cannes, including All We Imagine as Light, Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know and Be Qayaam. These thought-provoking films offered the students a deeper appreciation of storytelling techniques and global cinematic trends.

In addition to film screenings, the students participated in masterclasses focusing on key aspects of filmmaking such as sound design, cinematography and film distribution. These sessions were helmed by industry experts, providing technical knowledge and practical skills that are crucial for aspiring filmmakers.

The cultural experience of IFFI extended beyond films, as the festival also featured captivating musical performances by popular bands like Yellow Diaries and When Chai Met Toast. These performances added a vibrant dimension to the event and highlighted the synergy between music and cinema. The exposure to such a dynamic environment was instrumental in broadening the students’ understanding of the global film industry. They had the opportunity to network with professionals, opening doors to potential collaborations and career opportunities.

Prakash K, Asst. Professor, NICO accompanied the students during the festival. The students returned with a wealth of knowledge, inspiration and a renewed passion for filmmaking. Attending IFFI 2024 was not only an academic enrichment but also a memorable chapter in their journey as budding filmmakers. It reinforced the importance of cinema as a medium for storytelling, cultural exchange, and creative expression.






News from NIPT | Clinical Assessment and Management in Femoroacetabular Impingement Syndrome

The Alumni Relations Cell, Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy organized an alumni talk in online mode on 25th November 2024. Ms. Aleena Joy Abraham, Physiotherapist, Sakra World Hospital, Bangalore (Alumna 2014 BPT) was the resource speaker. Ms. Aleena delved into the importance of assessment, special tests, management and recent advances in assessment and physiotherapeutic treatment of Femoroacetabular Impingement Syndrome. A total of 65 MPT students and interns participated in the event.

"There may be numerous languages in the world, and we may learn many of them. Some languages might hold contextual importance for global interactions. However, amidst all this, when we become aware of our own roots, our self-esteem is awakened. We should respect other languages and also love our own. Cultures, traditions and languages are complementary to each other. Celebrations like Rajyotsava inspire awareness about the significance of our mother tongue" said Shri Sharath Gore, Co-founder & Director, Vibrant PU College, Moodabidri speaking at the inaugural function of the Kannada Rajyotsava and Cultural Day celebrations at Dr. NSAM PUC, Mangaluru on 1st November 2024.

Principal Dr. Naveen Shetty K, remarked, "Education is not limited to curriculum-related classes. When students integrate commitment & discipline with learning, and appropriately utilize platforms for language, art & cultural expression, success is inevitable. News from NSAMPUCM | Red Cross Unit

The Red Cross Unit of Dr. NSAM PU College, Mangaluru organized a first aid training program on 29th October 2024 at the college auditorium to equip participants with essential life-saving skills and knowledge to handle various emergency situations.

Ms. Meena Malani, Retd. Home Guard Unit Officer was the resource person. She provided an insightful demonstration on managing critical scenarios such as Snake bite, Drowning, Floods, Heart attack etc. She explained the various tools used in first aid kits emphasizing their correct application during emergencies.  Principal Dr. Naveen Shetty K emphasized the critical role played by Red Cross during wartime by providing immediate and life-saving first aid to injured soldiers on the battlefield. He explained that these humanitarian efforts by the Red Cross ensured timely medical care which not only saved lives but also boosted the morale of troops. He encouraged students to participate in activities that promote awareness & training in first aid, emphasizing how such skills are vital in both everyday life and emergencies.

The session was interactive with students actively engaging in the demonstrations. 



News from NSAMPUCM | Gandhi Jayanti Celebrations

Gandhi Jayanti program organized by the NSS unit of Dr. NSAM PU College was celebrated at Munnur D.K. Zilla Panchayat Govt. Higher Primary School on 2nd October 2024, before the inaugural function of the NSS camp.

"The struggles & sacrifices of national leaders should serve as an inspiration to the current generation. The lives of Lal Bahadur Shastri and Mahatma Gandhi continue to serve as timeless examples of inspiration and virtue. Celebrating the birth anniversaries of such great patriots, transcending caste, religion and cultural differences, instils patriotism among the people and fosters unity," said Shri. Jayaram Shetty K, former MLA of the Mangalore Constituency and progressive farmer, while addressing the gathering as the chief guest.

Principal Dr. Naveen Shetty K, remarked, "Remembering and respecting the struggles of the freedom fighters is our duty. The life stories of great leaders should inspire us to imbibe principles of truth, sacrifice and non-violence."

The event was graced by dignitaries including the Block Education Officer, Mr. H.R. Justice K S Hegde Institute of Management (JKSHIM), Nitte hosted a talk on 22nd November 2024 for students with 'Operations' as their specialisation.

This interactive session, conducted by industry experts from Konkan Railway, offered valuable insights into the intricacies of railway operations and management. Mr. Wilson & Mr. Shridhar, Marketing and Training Managers respectively from Konkan Railway, provided students with a comprehensive understanding of real-world challenges & solutions and ignited a passion in them for the railway industry.

NUINS conducted a workshop sponsored by O’hygia LLP, Bangalore on ‘Sustain Menstrual Hygiene by Empowered Use of Menstrual Cup’ on 23rd November 2024 at the University Auditorium, Paneer under the Vriddhi Industry-Academia collaboration. Dr. Vismaya Kaveri, Asst. Professor, Fr. Muller Medical College was the resource person.

Prof. (Dr) AN Parameswaran, Director (Industry-Institute Collaboration), NMAM Institute of Technology was the Chief Guest & Prof. (Dr) R Narayana Charyulu, Principal, NGSM Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences was the Guest of Honour. Ms. Bindu Anil Kumar, Director, O’hygia LLP & Mr. Anil Kumar KB, CEO of Lozet Pharma, Bangalore were present.

Dr. Vismaya Kaveri provided an in-depth overview of menstrual health, debunked common myths, and discussed the significance of maintaining good menstrual hygiene and how to insert & remove a menstrual cup with lecture, demonstration and return demonstration. Mr. Anil Kumar K discussed the chemistry behind sanitary products, shedding light on the chemical composition of various menstrual products, including the presence of dioxins, furans, volatile organic compounds and phthalates. He also emphasized the importance of choosing eco-friendly alternatives like menstrual cups, aligning with the message of ‘Think Green, Act Green’. Various menstrual cups and related products were exhibited giving participants a first-hand look at the available options for sustainable menstrual care.







News from NUINS | Life skill training program

The Dept. of Mental Health Nursing, in collaboration with the Alumni Association of NUINS conducted a life skill training program on 23rd November 2024 for high school students of Anandashram High School, Someshwar.

Mr. Pradeep Kumar, Teacher welcomed the gathering. Mr. Sukesh Shetty, Asst. Professor, NUINS enlightened the audience on the significance of life skills and their practical application in everyday life. 80 students from Class 10 were divided into two groups for an activity-based training program. The sessions emphasized core life skills, including self-awareness, emotional regulation, decision-making, effective communication and creative thinking. Mr. Sukesh Shetty, Asst. Professor; Ms. Cleeta Anline Pinto, Principal, School of Nursing and Ms. Prathima Sherigarthy, Lecturer were the resource persons for the program.

The activities were led by Ms. Jincy KS, supported by 3 MSc students, ensuring the program's smooth execution.

News from NSAMPUCM | Closing ceremony of NSS special annual camp

"Students should not just be bags that hold rice but fields where rice can grow" said Chief guest Chandrahasa Shetty, Entrepreneur & District Organizing Secretary, Kannada Sahithya Parishat, DK speaking at the closing ceremony of the NSS special annual camp held at the DK Zilla Panchayat Higher Primary School, Munnur on 8th October 2024. He emphasized that children are valuable to society and should become guiding lights for the nation. Highlighting the role of life experiences in true education, he encouraged students to foster creativity, resilience and personal growth to achieve success.

Dr. Naveen Shetty K, Principal mentioned that in the NSS there are no divisions based on caste, religion or language. He emphasized that those involved in service work have more opportunities to grow socially & encouraged students to seize the moment and develop a personality that others will admire.

Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, Sri. UT Khader inaugurated the special annual NSS Camp of Dr. NSAM PU College, Mangaluru held at Munnur DK Zilla Panchayat Govt. Higher Primary School on 2nd October 2024.

Mr. Khader emphasized the importance of using democratic rights responsibly, saying, "The right to speak should not harm society. When our words and actions align with truth, we help our nation grow - this is real patriotism." He praised the college for teaching values like cleanliness and hard work through personality development camps and encouraged students to make the most of the opportunities they receive. He shared how his involvement with NSS during his college days instilled discipline in him, shaping his journey from a backbench student to serving as a four-time minister and speaker.

Dr. Naveen Shetty K, Principal highlighted that values like teamwork, equality and cleanliness are key lessons from the NSS and advised students to make the most of this unique experience.

Justice K S Hegde Institute of Management (JKSHIM) and Kanara Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI), Mangalore signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 25th October 2024. The MoU was signed by Dr. Sudhir M, Director, JKSHIM, and Mr. Anand G Pai, President, KCCI, in the presence of other dignitaries. This collaboration aims to foster industry-academia partnerships, promote research & innovation and create opportunities for students and faculty members.

The Mega Blood Donation Camp was organized on 22nd October 2024 at the college in association with Lions Club, Hiriadka; District Blood Bank, Udupi; Rotary Club, Nitte; Nitte-Gajria Specialty Hospital; HDFC Bank Ltd. (WBO), Mangalore; Youth Red Cross of Dr NSAM FGC and Rovers & Rangers of Dr NSAM FGC. The inauguration had in attendance Sri Yogeesh Hegde, Director (CM&D), Nitte Off-Campus Centre; Mr. Sudhir Hegde, President, Lions Club, Hiriadka; Dr Veena, District Blood Bank, Udupi; Mr Sathish Kemmannu, Rotarian, Rotary Club, Nitte; Mrs Sumana MK, Head, Dept. of Mathematics, Dr NSAM FGC and the officers of the NSS, YRC and Rovers & Rangers. 175 units of blood were collected.



News from NSAMFGCN | Model Exhibition 2024

Dr NSAM FGC hosted a Model Exhibition on 12th & 13th September 2024 for the PU students of the neighbouring colleges. Mr Ganapathi Bhat, Co-Founder of Creative PU College, Karkala inaugurated the event. 41 models were displayed (5 Science, 17 Computer Science (IoT) & 19 Commerce & Management). 1507 Pre-University students from 15 colleges attended the exhibition and also participated in the games & activities that were arranged.

The 37th Students’ Council Inauguration of Dr. NSAM FGC was held on 5th August 2024 at Sadananda Auditorium, NMAMIT. CA Goutham Pai D was the chief guest for the inauguration. The baton was officially passed to the new Student Council Secretary Mr. Aman S P and the college flag was handed over to him by the Principal. Dr. Veena Kumari B.K. administered the formal oath to the Council members. Mr. Aman S P presented the plans and proposals of all the associations under the Students’ Council for the year 2024-25. The formal ceremony was followed by cultural performances by the students.



News from NSAM FGC, Nitte | Training Cell – Leadership Training Camp

Dr. NSAM First Grade College, Nitte, in association with M R Pai Foundation & Forum for Free Enterprise, organised a two-day leadership camp for the freshers on 22nd & 23rd July 2024.

The trainers for the session were Mr. Rajiv Luv and Mr. Vivek Dattatray Patki from M R Pai Foundation & Forum for Free Enterprise. The training consisted of various activities and interactive sessions that helped the students to boost their confidence, improve leadership skills, communication skills, self-esteem, goal-setting, time management and team spirit. A total of 82 students participated in the leadership camp.

News from Dr. NSAM FGC, Nitte | Freshers’ Orientation

The Freshers’ Orientation was held from 15th to 17th July 2024. Prof (Major) Radhakrishna was the Chief Guest.

Resource persons, Dr. Jnaneshwar Pai, Mr. Ankith Kumar, CA Vinod Chandran, Dr. Sudhir Raj K and Ms. Shalini K Sharma conducted sessions on Personal Excellence, Mental Health & Wellbeing, Transition from Adolescence to Adulthood and more. Students were introduced to the college and faculty by Ms. Drishti V Baliga of the Dept. of Languages.

The University officials, Prof. (Dr) MS Moodithaya, Vice-Chancellor; Dr. Gopal Mugeraya, Vice President (Technical Education) and Dr. Harsha Halahalli, Registrar graced the occasion on 17th July 2024. They also felicitated two meritorious students who cleared the CA Final and CA Intermediate Exams. Games and cultural programs were organised for the freshers to make them comfortable.




News from NUCSER | Alumni Meet - Milan 2024

NUCSER Alumni Meet, Milan 2024 took place on 16th November 2024, bringing together 30 alumni to reconnect, reminisce, and celebrate shared accomplishments. The event began with a symbolic inauguration, where colorful beads poured into a glass represented the unity & diversity of the alumni. Dr. Suma Ballal, Dy. Registrar, Nitte DU, graced the event as the chief guest, while Prof. (Dr.) Indrani Karunasagar highlighted NUCSER’s legacy, inspiring pride among attendees. The program was hosted by Ms. Sujitha Felicitus, Secretary, Alumni Committee.

Ms. Varsha P Shetty, President, Alumni Committee welcomed the gathering for the evening function which featured engaging and fun activities led by Mr. Bhavish. A slideshow of nostalgic photos and messages from alumni unable to attend added sentimental value. The vibrant ambience, enhanced by DJ music, a moonlit outdoor setting and delicious dinner, ensured an unforgettable celebration. Ms. Prerana S, Treasurer delivered the vote of thanks.

Tokens of appreciation were presented by dignitaries as a gesture of gratitude. Milan 2024 successfully rekindled the alumni's bond with NUCSER, leaving everyone with cherished memories and enthusiasm for future reunions.








News from NUCSER | NSS Special Camp for Government School Children

The NSS Unit of NUCSER successfully organized a five-day camp from 12th to 16th November 2024 at the Govt. Higher Primary School, Padpu Bajal, Mangaluru. The camp was designed to engage students from Class 1 to 8 in diverse activities, focusing on their holistic development. The event included several educational and interactive sessions throughout the week. A dental checkup was conducted to promote oral hygiene, while workshops addressed important topics such as sanitation, menstrual hygiene, road safety, digital awareness and nutrition. Competitions like craft, drawing and essay writing encouraged the students to showcase their artistic and literary talents. Interactive activities like Zumba sessions provided a platform to express themselves. The winners were awarded prizes for various categories of events. The NSS unit also donated a steel cupboard to the school.

The NSS volunteers had an opportunity to closely interact with the students, understand their challenges and provide them meaningful solutions. The activities helped in raising awareness about critical issues and encouraged the students to adopt healthier habits. Mrs. Harshalatha, Principal of the school expressed her gratitude and invited the NSS team to conduct similar impactful activities in the future. A total of 120 students from the school and 30 volunteers from NUCSER participated in the special camp, contributing to its success.
