Reconnecting with Nature: A Step Toward Rejuvenating the Kumpala Water Body

As part of the proposed Water Body Rejuvenation and Community Engagement Project, a preliminary site visit was conducted at Kumpala village on Tuesday, 10th December 2024. The initiative aimed to restore the ecological balance of the water body while promoting community participation and sustainable environmental practices.

The visit brought together representatives from the Rotary Club of Mangalore, members of the local Rotary Community Corporation and faculty from the Nitte Institute of Architecture (NIA). The multidisciplinary team was led by Prof. Ar. Vinod Aranha, Director of NIA, accompanied by Ar. Aveek Ghosh and Ar. Anil Devadiga.

During the visit, the team assessed the current condition of the water body, its physical accessibility and the characteristics of the surrounding landscape. These observations will form the basis for developing a comprehensive rejuvenation plan focusing on ecological restoration, sustainable design interventions and active community involvement.

This collaborative initiative between the Rotary and Nitte University reflects a shared commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility. By integrating architectural expertise with community engagement, the project seeks to create a replicable model for sustainable water body management and local ecosystem revival. The visit marks an important first step in a long-term effort to enhance the environmental and social fabric of Kumpala through informed, participatory action.
