News from NICO | National Voters Day - 2026

The Nitte Institute of Communication (NICO), in association with the NSS Unit of NICO and the Nitte Film Society, observed National Voters’ Day on 29th January 2026 with a special program titled “Your Vote, Your Voice” to create awareness among students about the importance of voting and active democratic participation.

The program was anchored by Ms. Ridha. Dr. Moulya Baladi, Head, NICO, welcomed the gathering and delivered the opening address, highlighting the significance of voting as a fundamental democratic right and responsibility, especially for young citizens and first-time voters. Mr. Kishlay introduced the chief guest, Mr. Vincent D’Souza, Senior Assistant Editor and Mangaluru Bureau Chief at The New Indian Express.

Drawing from his experience as a journalist, Mr. Dsouza shared real-life examples and supported them with statistical data to emphasise the power of each vote in shaping governance and public policy. His address encouraged students to look beyond apathy and recognise voting as a tool for social change.

Following the talk, an interactive discussion session allowed students to engage with the speaker and reflect on contemporary electoral issues. The event then featured a screening of the Tamil political satire film Mandela, which reinforced the theme of the program by portraying the impact of a single vote in a democratic setup.

The program concluded on a reflective note, successfully sensitising students to the value of informed and responsible voting, in a democracy.
