News from NGSMIPS | Life on Land

The SDG Cell of NGSM Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences arranged a guest lecture titled "The Butterfly Effect: Why Protecting One Small Wing Impacts the Entire Ecosystem" by Mr. Sammilan Shetty, the visionary conservationist and founder of Sammilan Shetty’s Butterfly Park, on 18th February 2026.

Mr. Shetty has received significant recognition, including an honor from the World Book of Records (London) and the ‘Amazing Indians’ award by Times Now. He is the creator of India's first comprehensive documentary on butterflies, titled "Life of Butterflies," making him a leading voice on biodiversity and the role of butterflies as vital indicator species within our ecosystem. This butterfly park, established in 2011, across 7.35 acre open-air sanctuary in Belvai, Western Ghats of Karnataka, is the first private butterfly park which is home to over 150 species of butterflies. The seminar focused on the critical role, butterflies play in environmental health and the interconnectedness of ecosystems, directly addressing SDG 15: Life on Land.

The session provided attendees with a profound understanding of the "Butterfly Effect" and the crucial importance of butterfly conservation for maintaining ecological balance and biodiversity, emphasizing their role as vital indicator species.

The event was coordinated by Prof. (Dr) Ramkumar P and Dr. Roopa Basutkar. A total of 71 students/research scholars and 4 faculty members participated in the program.
