Dr. Vinay Hegde chosen for Rotary Vandana Award - 2020

Eminent Educationist, Industrialist and Chancellor of Nitte University Dr. Vinay Hegde has been chosen for the Rotary Annual State Level prestigious “Vandana Award – 2020”. 

The award is jointly instituted by Rotary Club of Mangalore Central and Rotaract Club of Mangalore City, which will be conferred on Dr. Vinay Hegde Mangaluru in appreciation of his exemplary achievements in the field of Education. The award comprises of a citation, plaque and memento. 

Sri. Kota Srinivas Poojary, Dist. Incharge Minister, Karnataka State Minister for Port & Fisheries will grace the occasion as Chief Guest and will felicitate the Awardee in a function to be held on Saturday 27.06.2020 at 06.30 pm at Hotel Ocean Pearl, Mangaluru. President of Rotary Club of Mangalore Central Rtn. Dr. Jayaprakash Poonja will preside over the function. Rotary Dist. Asst. Governor Rtn. Geethanada Pai and Dist. Rotaract representative Rtr. Ganesh G T will be the guest of honour on this occasion.

KSHEMA Health Cards distributed to journalists

KSHEMA Health Cards were distributed to journalists by the DK District Working Journalists’ Association and Press Club with the co-operation of Justice K S Hegde Hospital, at a function held at the Press Club on February 12, Tuesday. N Vinay Hegde, Chairman of Nitte Education Trust and Chancellor of Nitte (Deemed-to-be-University) symbolically distributed the health cards to journalists.

Speaking on the occasion, Vinay Hegde said journalists are an important part of the society and protection of their health is also of paramount importance. He said his hospital was committed to provide good healthcare facilities for journalists.

Hemanth, Public Relations Officer of the Hospital, explained the facilities entitled to the health card holders. He said health cards were being distributed to 97 journalists in the first phase. Over two hundred journalists will be getting the Health Card.

Srinivas Nayak Indaje, President of DK Working Journalists Union presided over the function. Patrika Bhavan President Anand Shetty, Press Club President Annu Mangaluru, Journalists Association General Secretary Ibrahim Adkasthala and others were present.

KSHEMA NITTE CPR campaign valedictory function and World Heart Day celebrations - KSHEMA

The Department of Anaesthesiology organized a Public Awareness Program, "KSHEMA NITTE CPR campaign valedictory function and world heart day celebrations " on 07-10-2016 at Nitte K S Hegde Management auditorium.

“KEEP AWAY HEART DISEASES WITH BALANCED DIET, STRESS FREE LIFE AND AVOIDING THE ADDICTIONS: N V HEGDE” :

Valedictory function of KSHEMA-Nitte CPR awareness campaign and World Heart Day celebrations was held at Nitte K S Hegde Management auditorium on October 7th 2016. In his presidential speech Shri Vinay Hegde, Chancellor of Nitte University, said “recently, the heart diseases are on increase due to stress, junk food and changed life style. Right now in India more people die out of heart diseases than cancer. Balanced diet, stress free life and avoiding the addictions like tobacco and alcohol will keep heart disease away”. Doctors from K S Hegde Medical Academy (KSHEMA) trained more than 5000 students (5244) of Nitte campus in CPR (Cardio pulmonary resuscitation - an emergency procedure to be performed in the event of sudden cardiac arrest to save life) over a month from September 3rd to October 4th, and this is likely to be world record. These students participated in CPR competition and bagged prizes. The audience were enthralled by the role play presented by the doctors highlighting the importance of learning CPR.

On this occasion, Dr K Subramanyam, Chief Cardiologist, K S Hegde Hospital, spoke on ‘prevention of cardiac disease’. Dr S Ramanand Shetty, Vice chancellor, Nitte University, was the chief guest. The Nitte-Gajria Specialty Hospital that has come up at Sheshadrinagar on Tellar Road in Karkala was inaugurated on January 4, Saturday by former Karnataka Lokayukta and former Supreme Court judge Justice N Santosh Hegde. The 70 bed hospital has been constructed at a cost of Rs 12 crore by the Nitte University in association with the Gajria Family Foundation of NRI entrepreneur Lalchand Gajria of Bahrain. In his inaugural address, Justice Santosh Hegde said the rural people were deprived of better medical facilities mainly because doctors hesitate to offer services in rural areas. Pointing out that the government alone cannot ensure that all sections of the society get good education as well as health care facilities, Justice Hegde said various organisations are coming forward at present in this direction.

Lalchand Gajria, President of Gajria Family Foundation who also spoke said social service was the main objective of his Trust which aims to render services in the healthcare sector through this hospital. Dr N Vinay Hegde, Chancellor of Nitte University in his address said man should not be completely money oriented in life but should consider social service too a part of his life. He said the new hospital has been set up in best interests of people of the area and added all modern facilities are available here at an affordable cost. K Jayaram Prabhu, Managing Trustee of Sri Venkatramana Temple of Karkala presided over the function. NITTE Mangaluru Marathon

The city of Mangaluru on Sunday February 19 set a new record for itself, next only to Bengaluru, as over15,000 people, young and old alike, filled the streets as part of the half marathon and 10 km run organized by Nitte University along with DK Athletics Association.

Mayor Harinath and Nitte Education Trust chairman Vinay Hegde flagged off the run at Mangala Stadium early morning.

Brand ambassador of the event, athletes Anil Shetty and Shridhar Alva were present.

The run was held in various categories, namely 5 km for high school boys, 5 km for college boys, 3 km for college girls, 21 km (half marathon) for men, women and seniors (46-60 years), 3 km for high school girls, special race for the differently-abled, 3 km run for primary students (boys), and 2 km for primary students (girls).

There were also 10 km run for men, women, and for senior citizens (in men and women categories) above 61 years of age.

The half marathon which began from Mangala Stadium moved towards Mannagudda, New Chitra, old Balaji theatre, Bunder, Rao and Rao Circle, Hampankatta, KS Rao Road, PVS Circle, Lalbagh, Bejai Kapikad, Kuntikan, Derebail, Kavoor, Bondel and back the same route upto Lalbagh, and then to the stadium. The 10 km run took a U-turn at Kuntikan road and back to the stadium; while the 5 km run took a left turn at old Balaji theatre, moved towards Sharavu temple and then to KS Rao Road, PVS circle, Lalbagh, and back to the stadium.

Addressing the closing ceremony, Vinay Hegde said, "It is good to see that this marathon has turned out to be a successful one. We are organising this marathon for the fifth time. Lots of young athletes took part in this marathon. It is a proud moment for us to witness over 15,000 athletes taking part, which is a record, next only to the Bengaluru Marathon.

"The education system has changed. Usually, in the month of February exams are scheduled due to which the aspiring athletes cannot participate in marathons. In future, we need to look into this so that large numbers of athletes take part in such marathons," he said.

Principal commissioner (IT) Narottham Mishra said, "The Althletic Association and Nitte have taken a good initiative in oraganising this 5th marathon in Mangaluru to create health awareness among the people, and in turn have rendered a great service to the society. Athletes took part with good spirit and sportsmanship and I congragulate all the participants on making this marathon a big success."

Doctors’ Day celebrated at K S Hegde Charitable Hospital

Mangaluru, July 1, 2023: Doctors’ Day was celebrated at the Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital on July 1, Saturday. A function was held in this connection at the Avishkara Auditorium of the institution.

Several senior doctors were felicitated on the occasion by Dr. N Vinay Hegde, Chancellor of Nitte Deemed-to-be University for their distinguished services to the medical field.

Dr Shukla S Shetty, Head of the Department of Gynaecology at JJM College of Davangere, Dr N Balakrishna Bhat, physician from Ujire, Dr M Jayapal Shetty, physician from Manjeshwar and Dr M Sadashiv Polnaya, Physician from Ullal were felicitated on the occasion.

Dr M Shantharam Shetty, Pro-Chancellor of Nitte Deemed-to-be University spoke about the great physician Dr B C Roy whose birthday is being celebrated as Doctors’ Day.

Live video conference on 'Creative Cardiology" - KSHEMA

Nitte university Chancellor N Vinay Hegde said doctors should focus on providing quality treatment to patients and also serving in rural areas. He was speaking at a live video conference on 'Creative Cardiology, organised in collaboration with K S Hegde Medical Academy, Nitte University, and Methodoist De-bakery heart and vascular center, Houston, USA, on Nitte campus in Deralakatte here recently.

Hegde said, "Seventy percent of India's population lives in village. Therefore, providing quality health services should be the motto of young doctors. We are giving free treatment to more than three lakh people every year through KSHEMA hospital," Everyday, more than 1500 people get treatment in the hospital," he added.

Yenepoya University Vice chancellor Prof Dr M Vijaya Kumar inaugurated the programme. Nitte University Pro Vice Chancellor Dr M Shanthram Shetty, registrar Dr M S Moodithya, Dean Dr Satish Kumar Bhandary, Director (Finance) Rajendra M and Methodist De- Bakery Heart and Vascular Centre (Houston, USA) Senior Cardiology Consultant Dr Ajith Adyantay were present on the occasion.

Inaugural ceremony of B.C. Alva Sports Complex - Nitte Campus

Nitte Education Trust one of the renowned educational institutions of undivided South Kanara has established a state-of-the-art sports facilities B C ALVA SPORTS COMPLEX at its Nitte Campus near Karkala. 

Late Sri Bellipady Chandrahasa Alva (1923 to 1982). He served as Chief Engineer of Karnataka Electricity Board (KEB). Later was deputed as Chairman of Bhakra Beas Management Board, Chandigarh. He was an Indian Cricketer and represented India at two unofficial test matches against Common Wealth XI in 1951-52. He represented Madras from 1944-45 to 1954-55. He captained Tamilnadu team. He played for Karnataka (then Called Mysore)in the year 1957-58 and 1958-59.

The facilities in the B C ALVA SPORTS COMPLEX include an indoor stadium of 14000 sqft which has 3 Badminton Courts, one Basket Ball Court, facilities for Table Tennis and other indoor games like carom and chess, a modern Multi gymnasium, Individual Exercise Stations for Weight lifting and Power Lifting and Separate fitness centre for athletes. 

The outdoor facilities are: 

• Standard Athletic turf Track of 400 mts. and facilities for all types of throws & Jumps and Pavilion with fitness centre

The inauguration of these facilities will be done by former Indian cricketer and current ICC Match Referee, Sri. Javagal Srinath on 7th of April at 4pm in the presence of Sri. K . Abhayachandra Jain, Minister for Youth Services, Sports and Fisheries, Govt of Karnataka and Justice N. Santosh Hegde, Former Lokayukta of Karnataka. Sri N Vinay Hegde, President Nitte Education Trust & Chancellor, Nitte University will preside over the function. 

The Nitte Education Trust campus, Nitte under the Presidentship of Sri N Vinaya Hegde is aimed at connecting and transforming the potential of individuals across the diverse spectrum. Conceptualized in 1979, Nitte Education Trust is well recognised in the field of education, health-care and sports. The Trust supports budding and promising sports men and women by giving free education along with diet and hostel facilities. Technical support and training is given by a team of experienced coaches, medical and physiotherapy care. Ray of Hope for advanced/ terminal cancer patients at Justice K.S. Hegde Charitable Hospital with the use of HIPEC

Cancer treatment generally involves the use of either or combination of surgery, drugs (chemotherapy) and radiation. In spite of all these modalities, cancer treatment still remains a challenge specially in advanced stages when the malignancy has spread to other areas of body. Newer technologies and innovations aimed at better compliance and treatment outcomes are being evolved for improving the quality of life of cancer patients and cancer survivors. One of such modern technologies is Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC).

HIPEC is a technique where highly concentrated cancer drug is heated and delivered directly into the abdomen during surgery. Unlike the conventional chemotherapy in which drugs are infused into blood though the veins after surgery to destroy cancer cells, HIPEC on the other hand, delivers the chemotherapy directly to cancer cells in the abdomen. Heating the solution also improves the absorption of chemotherapy drugs by tumor cells and destroys microscopic cancer cells that remain in the abdomen after surgery as they are not revealed to the eye during conventional surgery.

45 year old lady Rani (name changed) underwent surgery and chemotherapy for ovarian cancer 8 months back, but cancer recurred and it was spreading to all parts of the abdomen.

The HIPEC procedure was performed on her as per the international guidelines using dedicated HIPEC machine imported from Italy and procedure took around 15 hours. The patient is recovering after the operation. The specialists were trained in HIPEC from NCI Milan, Italy and AIIMS, New Delhi. The procedure was done by Dr. Vinay Kumar Rajendra, Surgical Oncologist & HIPEC Specialist along with the team of Oncologists Dr. Vijith Shetty ( Medical Oncologist), Dr. Jayaram Shetty( HOD Radiation Oncology), Dr. Ail Sandeep and Dr. Mallikarjuna Rao, a team of Anaesthesiologists headed by Dr. Sripad Mehandale and surgeons of Justice K.S. Hegde Charitable Hospital headed by Dr. Rajashekar Mohan.

In this procedure, it is important that the recommended drug concentration and temperature is achieved, if not the treatment would be ineffective. More so any variation in drug dosage or temperature variations could be fatal. Hence this procedure is to be performed at a tertiary care center where skilled and experienced staff are available.

5th convocation ceremony of Nitte University

5th convocation ceremony of Nitte University was held September on 6th 2015 at K S Hegde Auditorium, Deralakatte. Dr M C Mishra directo, New Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) was the chief guest of the event.

Dr Joshi M Bharath was awarded the Dr A K Munshi gold medal in periodontics and preventive dentistry, Dr Ksing Hui of BDS was awarded the Dr U S Mohandas Nayak Award and Nitte University gold medal, Dr K Kavyamala of MBBS was awarded the late Mulky Ramamohan Adyantaya gold medal and Nitte University gold medal, Deeksha U Suvarna of Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science was awarded Nitte University gold medal, Bidya Paudel of Bachelor of Science in Nursing was awarded Nitte University gold medal, Thenzin Joyedan of Post Basic Bachelor of Science in Nursing was awarded Nitte University gold medal and Vidya of Master of Science (Bio Medical science) was presented the Dr Indrani Karunasagar gold medal.

Dr Mishra presented degree certificates to 15 students of doctors of philosophy, 151 students of medicine, 151 students of dentistry, 110 students of pharmacy, 76 students of nursing, 16 students of physiotherapy, 22 students of allied sciences, 5 students of BSc, and 5 students of journalism.
