The International Forest day was celebrated with great fervour at Nitte (Deemed to be University) on 21st March 2019 at the University Auditorium, Paneer campus, Mangalore with the call to “Nurture Nature” given by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, on the occasion. The United Nations has declared this year’s theme as “Forests and Education - Learn to Love Forests”.
A week-long awareness program was conducted in the constituent institutes of the University with participation of over 150 students in various competitions such as modelling, collage, painting, debates, elocutions, quiz etc on the theme of ‘Forest’, the fragile but threatened environment. The highlight was the arduous yet dedicated task of successfully developing QR codes for all the trees in the campus by the students of Nitte University Centre for Science Education & Research under the able guidance of the environment ecology expert, Prof. Dr. Smitha Hegde. Every tree on the campus was tagged with a QR code to enable educating students and visitors on plant diversity. The practice of tree adoption included nurturing them and this was executed through undergraduate student volunteers who have adopted several trees on campus. Weak saplings were preferred for adoption over healthy trees. The students are committed to regular watering and care of plants especially during the dry summer months. The Nitte University Green Initiative Project (NUGIP) has planted over 700 trees on campus during the last two years with the support of Air Cmde Mr. Sunil Pai.
Prof. Dr. Smitha Hegde, Member Secretary, NUGIP, welcomed the gathering and presented the activities carried out during the year. A green audit of the campus resulted in GIS tagging of 1932 plants of significance on campus. Today it is home to over 200 medicinal plants of the region. Presiding over the celebration, Prof. Satheesh Kumar Bhandary called upon all to respect mother earth and see that nature is taken care of in a sustainable fashion for the future generation. This drive will enable us to develop and sustain healthy campus for progressive academic and research activities conducted on the campus, he said. The guest of honour, Dr. M.S. Moodithaya, Pro-Vice Chancellor who has supported the green initiative of the University with unparalleled commitment, administered the oath to the young members of the green brigade. Mr. Prakash Netalkar, Conservator of Forests and Managing Director, Karnataka Cashew Development Corporation Ltd., Mangalore was the Chief guest. He appreciated the futuristic approach of the University, in its progressive ideas of tree conservation and tagging.
