Workshop on ‘Nanoparticle characterization by zetasizer’ - NGSMIPS

A one-day workshop on ‘Nanoparticle Characterization by Zetasizer’ was organized by the Department of Pharmaceutics, NGSM Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences in association with Malvern-Aimil Ltd., Bangalore. The objective of this workshop was to familiarize research scholars and students working in the area of nanotechnology with the principles of Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) and Electrophoretic Light Scattering (ELS) on which the working of the Zetasizer is based as well as handling of the instrument itself. The Zetasizer is an important tool that can be used in the determination of particle size, polydispersity index (PDI), zeta potential and molecular weight of all types of nanoparticle dispersions.

The workshop began with a short inaugural ceremony. Dr. Rekha P.D, Professor and Deputy Director of Yenepoya Research Centre was the Chief Guest. Dr. Harsha Halahalli, Director (Curriculum Development), NitteDU was the Guest of Honour. The guest speakers were Mr. Dwijendra Trivedi, Asst. Business Manager, Malvern Panalytical and Mr. Sandeep H.B, Application Specialist, Malvern Application Centre of Excellence. The ceremony was presided over by the Principal, Dr. C.S. Shastry. Dr. R. Narayana Charyulu, Head of the Dept. of Pharmaceutics, delivered the welcome address. Dr. Rekha stressed on the importance of having a thorough knowledge of the fundamentals on which the working of an instrument may be based and as a result it would be possible to use the instrument for varying applications. Dr. Harsha Halahalli said that the growing importance of nanotechnology has permeated into all possible commercial applications and is making the use of instruments such as the Zetasizer essential in the area of research.

The morning session consisted of three lectures delivered by Mr. Sandeep HB which covered the fundamentals of DLS and ELS and their applications in nanoparticle characterization. The afternoon session was exclusively devoted for hands-on training with the Zetasizer and for interpretations of the data obtained. The delegates who attended from different institutions posed several queries related to the interpretations and expressed their appreciation of the workshop with some encouraging and positive feedback. The participants were presented with a Certificate of Participation. The workshop concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by Dr. R. Narayana Charyulu.
