On that day, in 1960, police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa, against the apartheid pass laws. He spoke on the topic “Racial Equality and Youth”. With his political science background, Dr. Bhat delivered the talk in an eloquent manner citing the preamble of the Constitution of India and mentioned the great examples of leaders who championed the cause of equality including the anti-apartheid movement of Dr. Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi’s struggle, contribution of Martin Luther King and Abraham Lincoln in removing racism from the world. The President of the function, Prof. Dr. Moodithaya, Pro VC, NitteDU highlighted on the issue of discrimination from an economic point of view and enlightened the audience on how the growth of a country and its economy depends on its ability to embrace one and all.
