The Forensic Odontology Unit (FOU) of AB Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences was inaugurated by Justice N Santosh Hegde, former judge of the Supreme Court of India & former Solicitor General of India on 21st March 2017.
The Unit commenced the first Certificate Course in Forensic Odontology from 27th June to 2nd July 2022 and the inaugural program was held at Avishkaar on 27th June. Mr Hariram Shanker (IPS), Dy. Commissioner of Police who was the Chief Guest, addressed the gathering and stressed the need for scientific evidence in crime prevention and appreciated the initiation of the course.
Guest of Honour Prof. Dr. Prashanth Shenoy, General Secretary of the Indian Academy of Oral Medicine & Radiology and HoD, OMR, Yenepoya Dental College spoke on the significance of g the course and its benefits. Prof Dr. Mahabalesh Shetty K, HoD, Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, KSHEMA spoke on the importance of Forensic Odontology in human identification and importance of maintaining dental records. Prof Dr US Krishna Nayak, Principal & Dean, ABSMIDS delivered the presidential address and mentioned the need for such a knowledgeable course and the sparsity of the same.

A total of 13 delegates registered for the course from Karnataka and neighbouring states. The impetus was on imparting quality knowledge, from the basics in Forensic Odontology to numerous topics of theoretical and practical importance. Registered candidates were taught in hands-on mode, for better understanding of various topics like Cheiloscopy, Rugoscopy and Bite Mark Analysis. Also, a session of “Mock Court” was organized and a Dental Autopsy was performed in addition to a demonstration of the exhumation process. This is perhaps the first time in India that a total of 4 workshops were offered as a part of a Certificate Course in Forensic Odontology. These workshops included: Age estimation, Crime Scene Investigation, Disaster Victim Identification and Forensic Facial Approximation/Reconstruction. The scientific and artistic areas of both 2D & 3D forensic manual facial reconstruction were demonstrated and each delegate gained hands-on experience.
Dr. Aman Chowdhury, Secretary General of The Indo Pacific Academy of Forensic Odontology (INPAFO) congratulated the management and college authorities for successfully organizing this unique Certificate Course comprising hands-on workshops.
