News from NUINS | ‘APATHBANDHU’ program organised for Indian coast guards in first aid and emergency care

The training program for Indian coast guards in first aid and emergency care was organized by Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences in collaboration with the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care, KSHEMA & IIC Nitte (DU) on 26th July 2022 at NU-MEDISIM.

Commander of Indian Coast Guard Sri. B Venkatesh and Dr. Manoj George Varghese, DHO Indian Coast guard visited the venue and addressed the participants, and wished the training a grand success. Dr. Gayathri Bhat, Chief Coordinator NU-MEDISIM, interacted with the participants and assessed their prior experience of first aid care. She also gave an introductory session on first aid care. Dr. Fatima Dsilva briefed on first aid during trauma and how to shift victims safely to the hospital. Mrs. Cleeta Pinto demonstrated the techniques of hemorrhage control. A session on wound care was dealt by Dr. Sabitha Nayak followed by bandaging and restraining by Dr. Neetha Kamath. Mrs. Latha S explained and demonstrated cardiopulmonary resuscitation and Prof. Sujatha R briefed on first aid measures on foreign body aspirations. All the sessions included lecture cum discussion, role play and demonstrations. In the afternoon sessions, practice demonstrations were taken by each participant.

A total of 17 coast guards staff were trained in first aid and emergency skills. The training program concluded on 26th July at 4.00 pm with a valedictory function. Dr. Srinikethan, Director of Technical Research and Innovation, Nitte DU was the Chief Guest. Mr. Abhimanyu and Mr. S K Patro, the trainees expressed that the training was very useful and helpful in executing their jobs. Dr. Fatima Dsilva welcomed the gathering and Dr. Sabitha Nayak proposed the vote of thanks. The program was compered by Dr. Neetha Kamath.
