News from KSHEMA | World No Tobacco Day-2025

On the occasion of “World No Tobacco Day-2025”, the Department of Psychiatry, KSHEMA organised a program at the Glass House, Justice K.S Hegde Hospital to highlight the risks of tobacco consumption with the theme of “Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing Industry Tactics on Tobacco and Nicotine Products” on 31st May 2025.

Prof. (Dr) Shrinivasa Bhat U welcomed the gathering and spoke about the industry tactics in luring the youth into consuming tobacco. Chief Guest, Prof (Dr) B. Sandeep Rai, Dean, KSHEMA inaugurated the program and spoke about raising awareness by conducting such programs on a regular basis. Prof (Dr). Sumalatha R Shetty Medical Superintendent, presided over the function. She underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in combating tobacco use and protecting public health.

The dignitaries released an education booklet for the Tobacco Cessation Clinic of K S Hegde Hospital, highlighting the importance of public awareness on tobacco’s health risks. Dr. Giridhar B H, Professor, Pulmonary Medicine, discussed tobacco’s harmful effects and stressed the role of awareness programs and cessation support in building a healthier community

A Digital Collage competition on the theme, ‘Youth-Say NO to Tobacco’ was held for the students and faculty of Nitte institutions. The prize winners were: 1st place: Avighna Pai & Archana K, MBBS Students; 2nd Place: Mr Sankhadeep Das, MBBS Student & Dr Anusha Rashmi, Assoc. Professor Community Medicine; 3rd Place: Ms Jinita Jose from NUINS. All the prize winners received certificates and cash prizes of Rs 5000/-, Rs. 3000/- and Rs. 2000/- respectively.

A creative street play depicting the harm caused by tobacco consumption was performed by the students of Dr. MV Shetty College of Social Work. The event not only educated the public on the dangers of tobacco but also provided practical support for those looking to quit, reinforcing the ongoing commitment to a healthier, tobacco-free future. Dr. Smitha T., Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, delivered the vote of thanks.
