News from NICO | Film Sound Workshop with Ms. Vandana Ramakrishna

A workshop on Film Sound was conducted on 15th & 16th October 2025 at the Multimedia Lab, Nitte Institute of Communication (NICO). The workshop was attended by the III and IV year students specializing in Short Film Making and Documentary Film courses.

The resource person for the workshop Ms. Vandana Ramakrishna is an accomplished sound designer who has worked on prominent Bollywood productions such as Badass Ravikumar, OMG 2, Ram Setu and the acclaimed web series Made in Heaven. Over the two days, Ms. Vandana introduced students to the fundamentals of sound design, recording techniques, Foley, ambient sound and post-production processes. She emphasized the importance of sound in creating mood, emotion, and realism in films.

Students actively participated in the hands-on practical sessions, where they collaborated to shoot a short documentary exercise and a short scene under Ms. Vandana’s guidance. She demonstrated the use of professional sound recording equipment and provided real-time feedback on students’ techniques and creative choices.

The workshop offered students valuable insights into the technical and artistic aspects of sound design. It proved to be an engaging and highly educational experience, enhancing their understanding of how sound contributes to cinematic storytelling. The session concluded with an interactive discussion, where students shared their learning outcomes and reflections.
