The Department of Psychiatry and Tobacco Cessation Clinic, KSHEMA, observed ‘World No Tobacco Day’ on 30th May 2026 under the theme “Unmasking the Appeal - Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction” to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use and promote tobacco cessation.
Dr. Shishir Kumar, HoD, Psychiatry, welcomed the gathering. The event was inaugurated by Prof. (Dr) B Sandeep Rai, Dean, KSHEMA, who emphasized the importance of educating youth and the public about the dangers of tobacco use. Prof. (Dr.) Sumalatha R. Shetty, Medical Superintendent, presided over the program.
Expert talks were delivered by Dr. Nandakishore B, HoD, Pulmonary Medicine, on the health hazards of tobacco and the benefits of quitting and Dr. Shilpa M, Reader, Public Health Dentistry, ABSMIDS, on the adverse effects of tobacco on oral health.
Ms. Sulochana, Coordinator, Tobacco Cessation Clinic, presented the clinic’s annual report. A digital poster competition on tobacco awareness was conducted, and prizes were awarded to the winners. A street play by students of Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences effectively conveyed anti-tobacco messages. Coordinated by Mrs. Agneita Aiman, Psychiatric Social Worker, the program successfully promoted awareness, healthy lifestyle choices and tobacco cessation initiatives among participants.
