The Department of Psychiatry, KSHEMA, observed World Schizophrenia Day on 23rd May 2026 to promote awareness about schizophrenia and encourage social acceptance of individuals living with mental illness.
Dr. Shishir Kumar, HoD, Psychiatry, highlighted the importance of eliminating the stigma associated with psychiatric disorders. The program featured an informative session by Dr. Rajesh M., Asst. Professor, Psychiatry, Yenepoya Medical College, who discussed schizophrenia, its treatment, early intervention and the role of family support in recovery. Patient and caregiver testimonials provided valuable insights into the challenges and recovery journey associated with the illness.
Dr. Sumalatha R Shetty, Medical Superintendent, Justice K. S Hegde Charitable Hospital, delivered the presidential address, while MSW students from Mangalore University, M. V. Shetty College and Government College, Vittal presented an awareness role play highlighting empathy, rehabilitation, treatment adherence and social inclusion.
Ms. Athira K V, Psychiatric Social Worker, Yenepoya Medical College, delivered a session on rehabilitation and family burden. The program witnessed active participation from faculty, healthcare professionals, patients, caregivers and students, reinforcing the importance of mental health awareness and community support.
